I have a hard time saying that, at least "by far." They are a counterpoint to each other. Strawberry Fields Forever doesn't mean as much without juxtoposing it with Penny Lane. And what about Day in the Life? Without McCartney's bridge, it is "just a song".

It is too bad that he wasn't able to stick around and write more...

dunno , Macka seems to be responsible for most of the really mellow stuff, and Lennon is more on top of the funky experimental stuff

take the MMT album

MMT title song : that's 50/50
Fool on the hill : Macka
flying : Lennon
Blue Jay Way : Lennon on acid
your mother should know : Macka
the Walrus : Lennon 2 days after having done acid, still a bit confused
Hello goodbye : Macka
Strawberry fields : Lennon
Penny Lane : Macka
Baby you're a rich man : dunno , i'de say they were both not sober
All you need is love : i'll make that a 50/50

the Lennon songs to for me rule the others
the Macka songs suffer from to much flower , to little power
i catch myself skipping them frequently , while i never skip the Lennon heavy tunes

EDIT just looked it up , flying and jay way are harrison influenced... didn't know .. but good skills by Harrison...

with the above "who's responsible" i mean , who seems dominant

EJ is/was a genius period, and Bernie was a genius too.

Paul M genius
John L genius

Paul Vs John BTDT debate for years don't care anymore, they were both great together and separately... so what.

Might as well argue Beethoven Vs Tchaikovsky

Paul/John together were much greater than the sum of their parts. Paul is much more "musical", John had a lot more to say. That's why they worked well together. Same with George. They were all very different. I guess that's why they split up.....

The White Album has been called their first SOLO albums, because there weren't a lot of songs that were collaborations.

Elton is/was to me the best in pop following the Beatles demise until the start of the disco era. It's too bad about what happened to his voice though following throat surgery a few years ago. He just doesn't have the range that added so much to his vintage sound. Now he's more of a low monotone vs. the high to low pitch changes that you hear in his voice on the '70's recordings. Still great to hear the songs though.

I appreciate EJ but after watching an interview recently with him, I was struck by how much Bernie Taupin played a huge role in his success and received little of the praise. EJ's music is very good but many of the songs are made great by Bernies words.

I seem to remember a story on how they were stuck in Jamaca for 3 or 4 days because of heavy rain and wrote Goodbye Yellow Brick Road during those few days.

I was reading the liner notes the other night while listening to GBYBR the other night and they had gone to Jamaica to record the album, but felt uneasy with the security situation and left to record in Switzerland. They had so much good material, but Elton thought a double album would be too costly for his fans. He finally decided to release it as a double. "Jamaica Jerk Off" was always one of my favorite songs on the album.

Same experience at the Earth, Wind & Fire show. They opening with 3 huge hits, played a couple of newer tunes that I didn't know (but many there did), then reeled off a dozen massive hits that everyone knew and danced to/sang along with. They didn't even take a breath between songs for most of them.
Thats the way of the world.:)

EJ is cool as well...

I always wondered what lies bleeding in his hand meant. That is what it sounded like to me at least. Slimy sounding then and now if you think about it.

+1

Picked up the remastered SACD version a while back, and it is amazing. Not only one of his best albums, but one of the best SACD remasters out there IMO.

I think the sequel album "The Captain And The Kid" was recently released as well. Should be interesting to see how it compares after all these years.

If that's the one with Blue Canoe, I agree. But Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a close second.

IMO, BS.
McCartney is as good or better than lennon ever was, he is still great in concert. The only difference is that Paul wrote about things that are real but puts a slightly optomistic slant on them and that reflects his attitude towards life. lennon was easily swayed and focused on the more negative aspects of life. To the wannabe tortured artitistic type lennon's music is more appealing, to normal people Paul's music means much more. I saw him in concert last november and it was very close to a life-changing experience. I absolutely could not believe the 3 hour-long string of incredible music he flawlessly shared with several thousand of his good freinds.
