Post Sweet Home Alabama!

Ten of us flew down to Mobile County for a week to help out with the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

We worked with family partners, local staff, Americorp kids and others.. Four homes in six days. Framed, roofs shingled, doors and windows in. Now ready for the subs.

Wonderful hosts. Great food. (BBQ and Gumbo!) Beautiful blue skies. Just a great week.

Awesome stuff! Any HH volunteer I've ever spoken to has said they put on great events, make it very enjoyable. Apparently they depend on people who volunteer for vacation, so they want to make it an enjoyable time.

Was that your situation, or was it a workplace-sponsored trip?

I met a young couple a few years ago who made a windfall, and just travel North America working on HH sites.

HFH is doing lots of building in the Gulf region as a result of Katrina.

Mobile was not hit too hard, but further south on the Bayou, loads of people were flooded pretty bad. Apparently they had some damage from a hurricane in 2004 as well..

The group I went with was mostly "skilled" volunteers and a few staff from the NYC affiliate.

HFH affilitates have projects going on from Louisiana to Alabama.

If you're going down to that neck of the woods again, get in touch. I'd tag along if I could get some time off.

It's not as rustic and undeveloped as the Catskills, though, is it?

Best,

JP

JP: Trying to turn it into an annual "Spring Break" type of event. Will be sure to let you know about the next trip.

Saw not one banjo player on any porch and no broken pickup trucks in any front yard. Unlike my beloved Catskills...
