who is into archery?
 

in my never-ending quest to find more hobbies than cantdrv55....

just kidding, i have been shooting pointy sticks at various objects for years. i will refrain from posting any more dead animal pictures. my last was javelina, which i will never hunt again, because they do not meet my "eat what i harvest" rule. nasty! well, anyways, i stepped into a archery pro shop with my old school PSE bow. overdraw, limb savers, rubber cushball looking things on the bowstrings, etc. the owner took one look at me, and pulled out three bows, and some arrows and told me to shoot them down his lane. HOLY CRAP! the new equipment is super quiet, ZERO vibrations, joys to shoot! my freaky right hand-ness, and left eye dominant thing never ever got my old bow in perfect tune. i shot straight holes with the new stuff.

so anyways, contemplating buying the new Mathews switchback XT.

I guess I'd be an "archery freak," too! Nothing wrong with that...I shoot a 2006 Hoyt PowerTec, 62# 28.5" with Carbon Express 200s. I bought it because of exactly what you describe: the new bows are simply amazing. I was shooting an old Browning previoulsy and then I shot my buddies Mathews Z-Max (about as old as my Browning, ~10 years) and I was hooked; I had to upgrade. Even though his Z-Max was of the same era, it was leaps and bounds ahead of mine.

I thought about getting a Switchback XT, but the price was just too damn high with college costs. Of course, 2 weeks after I buy my bow (which wasn't cheap, either) I meet the daughter of a large bow gear company and he offers me a fully setup SB XT for.....about 70% of list price on a bare XT, and still a few hundred less than what I paid for my PowerTec completely setup. Oh well.

Anyway, I'm rambling. But, my advice would be to shoot as many bows as you can before you make a decision. Martin, Hoyt, Mathews, BowTec, Ross, Pearson, all have some amazing products out, and you'd be doing yourself a disservice without at least checking the competition out. Shoot a variety of differently made bows, ie, different brace heights, split/solid limbs, axle length, etc. And, most importantly, find the bow that fits *you* the best. Oh yea, make sure you get your now setup and tuned by a pro --that's about the only difference between buying it at a Pro-shop and buying one at Gander Mtn. In my case, I had my Hoyt setup by Jeff Johnston. He took 5th in the 2004 ESPN Great Outdoor Games. Really knows what he's doing. See if you can't find someone similiar in your area.

slow, thanks for the info. i did go and buy that bow. cost me more than i could ever imagine, because my tranny blew up, driving to the shop. but i managed to get everything settled. i have been shooting alot, and i am having a blast. there is a great range here in the bay area.

I too would like to see hunt pics. I started a thread for them a year or two ago that promply died.

Are javelina that far west? I'd never heard of them until I got to S. TX.

I am...PSE archery for me...Deer hunting.

My father hunts deer with a crossbow. I've never used a bow and arrow, I'm more of a pistol and rifle guy myself...

Ouch! So that SB cost you what, $8,000:-P? It's worth it, that's an incredible bow.

What accessories did you mount on it? I have a Trophy Taker XL drop away and a Cobra sight with string peep. Interestingly enough, one of the girls in my dorm is the daughter of the owner of a big bow accessory company, so I might be switching.

What specs are you? I'm a 28.5" draw, 62# and am throwing Carbon Express 200s with 100gr. field points.

Hopefully I'll get a turkey in the next few weeks for Thanks Giving.

Man, those javs are smelly critters. They seem to take much enjoyment from chasing off whatever whitetail I'm setting up on.

Where can you shoot arrows in the Bay Area?

ok, my bow: 28" draw, with a string loop. p-22 sight, tubeless peep. ripcord fallaway arrow rest. arrows are gold tip, shooting 125 gr tips. have not chosen my broadheads yet.

spede, i found a free archery club. it is at the chabot space center in oakland. they have the standard range. and the best part is, they have three hiking trails with target along the way. some of the targets you really have to hike up too. all sorts of angles, trees, and stuff to shoot around. it is a blast, and fantastic exercise.

That sounds cool... can I rent equipment somewhere to take on the trail? This sounds like just the thing I need to spice things up a bit.
