prelim. reports state massive rock slides into kealakakua bay. water turning brown. my friends house is within rocks throw of beach.

geologic history fact about k-bay south of kona. epicenter 10 miles n-ne of kona town proper. k-bay to the elevation of 3000 ft above sea level has debris area of sand/seashells from past historical tsunami about 110,000 years ago. a 3000ft wave caused by landslide off of ridge line above k-bay! deep deep trench under water there.

this is where capt. cook was murdered. this is also ancient burial grounds for hawaiian royalty. funeral party kahunas would ask for volunteers from worker bee classes to lower royalty into caves along ridgeline. when royalty placed in lava cave, kahunas cut the ropes to the worker bees and they plummeted 1000's of feet to their deaths. to the right in pic is ridgeline that has historically sloughed off into the abyss causing massive tsunami.where water meets land at ridgeline is where capt. cook got whacked by really big, really pissed off natives! the white tower is where cook croaked!

well after getting up this am still not alot of news coming out of the islands. some power restored. some pics starting to come out. havent heard yet if my buddys place still stands. kind of strange seeing landmarks close to kona ruined.

we brainstormed this topic quite a few times while over there, drinking goofy drinks made out of rocket fuel w/goofier umbrellas in them. final synopsis of these impromptu gatherings regarding e-quakes/tsunamis/massive calderas.........................WE ARE SCREWED!

the rapid rate nowadays of the tsunami warning system there is a far cry better than in the past. but even if you do survive, you are at the mercy of shipped in food and supplies. to have a katrina like disaster on any or all of the islands would seriously be cataclysmic. read last night that pearl harbor naval base was w/out power and all naval food was being transferred to naval refrig. cargo ships docked there.

i would love to live there, and have seriously thought about it, but here is a damn good reason not to! earthquake early warning technology just aint happening, and even with a warning what would you do. the good thing is big islands volcano is not the same as say mt hood/mt st. helens/ mt. baker/mt. rainier/mexico city. meaning it is not the type to blow its stack. magma is constantly being released unlike the pacific northwest where magma builds up over time and finally blows! ie. extrusive activity.

the closest geologists have come to understanding volcanoes is prior to eruption earthquakes(tremors) do occur rapidly. maybe e-quake is precursor to more active magma flow out of big island creating new island on south end.

check out msnbc video!!!!!! camera actually caught SLOUGHING OFF OF RIDGELINE IN K-BAY. note in video capt. cooks monument is obscured. have walked that beach, scuba/snorkal/kayacked that bay! what a trip to be out there when this happened! had you been on beach you would have been toast. on normal day, bay is packed w/tourists and kids snorkling marine sanctuary. horse riders come down from top of ridge. avg. estimate of people there...........500! boats everywhere. its a marine sanctuary and teeming with marine life. used to hit the beach before dawn and watch turtles and dol-phinks(dolphins) do their thang. then i would take kids up to coffee plant for their chocolate covered mac nuts and i would drink (1) tall kona w/half/half and be BUZZED LIKE A MO-FO ALL DAY!

anybody interested in B&B there...........yell!

Interesting commentary, Charles. The Islands are a fascinating place. I hope everyone over there is doing well. Wonder what will happen to property prices? I remember what Iniki did to Kauai prices.

its not rocket science when you are standing at k-bay to see what happened ions ago. yes i have taken geology, and really enjoy it, but walking along kona highway one day and saw stratification of sand and seashells i about crapped myself. no different than looking at layers in grand canyon. or the pacific northwest. washington oregon calif. have been nailed by tsunamis ions ago and these were some big waves. my last geology class, professor stated if had to bet what city will be hit bad by earthquake/tsunami/ or cataclysmic volcanic eruption........................NAPLES OR SEATTLE!

while staying 3 times now in k-bay and in kona, it is something you have to be aware of. if in hilo visit tsunami museum.........its an eyeopener. so yes one problem begets another. earthquake causes tsunami, earthquakes precursors to magma activity, its kind of a circular deal. glad as hell i wasnt walking along k-bay beach or in a kayak let alone a boat or for that matter diving. had it been 10am instead of 7am there quite possibly could have been alot of deaths.

check out hawaiian channel for pics. kona /capn cook areas in rough shape lots of damage. maui -road to hana hammered w/landslides. maui northside hammered by landslides. this one did a whole lot of shaking! im sure theres damage to buddies house, its just how much we wonder? no calls going through and no e-mails answered. when structure 2/10's of a mile from seashore its not like they built on solid bedrock!

pics starting to come thru. not looking good.

just got off hawaiian volcanoes web site. k-bay has an actual volcano undersea that erupted in 1877! within one mile from shore. while diving there we had all commented on how lava flows looked newer than around kona airport kona harbor. so thought that was kind of interesting. dont think K-BAY is the place for me to retire! geologically big island too new for my tastes. maui next youngest and on up the chain. older the island..............the better the beaches! and less worries. well kind of. tsunami-proof sides of islands are a joke! hawaii dead center of pacific rim of fire from south america-to alaska-to japan.

and how do you stop sloughing off of earth into ocean causing self inflicted tsunami's?????

As I recall, property was cheap after Iniki hit. Of course, there wasn't much of an island left.

Whole resorts were blown to pieces...

I'll take Kauai. Oldest island. Most stable. Most lush. Rains a lot, though. Has the rainiest location in the U.S.

When we were in Kauai this summer, they tested the tsunami alarms, which sounded like air raid sirens.

People were attentive and came right in from the ocean.
