The original doesn't do it for me either, for the simple reason that I like my horror movies to have a sense of "fun" to them (EVIL DEAD, for example, or the Romero zombie movies)... the original is too relentless, too joyless.

I think the relentless thing was part of the idea, remake had hotter chicks, but was not good.
I would also say I like the Evil Dead movies better
