motorbike indicators not working

hi all,

i have tried posting this on my bike site, but compared to you guys they are hopeless (gawd bless 'em!)

anyway, i have bought an unloved 82 honda xl and am working thought it. last to fix are the indicators.

1. all bulbs okay and connections seem sound
2. only the rears come on
3. no flashing occurs
4. if i tap the flasher unit the respective rear light will flash off and on once.

so my questions are.

1. is this a permanently damaged flasher unit, or just sticking from lack of use?
2. how do i test a flasher unit?
3. is it possible the broken flasher unit is responsible for the fronts never coming on?

as always

my humble thanks

Check for loose/dirty connections or a unexpeced ground at the flasher, since when you use the tapulator it will flash. But, if a new flasher is cheap, I'd just go ahead and replace it.
