ruger 10/22. more after market goodies than a porsche 911. buy a volquartzen match barrel and shoot match heads from 50yds! 50 rd clips 100 rd drums all sorts of fun. get a tax stamp and have some real giggles with a silencer(suppressor).
|
I have a Browning semi auto like this...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1162486000.jpg
And also a Winchester 1906 gallery gun. Both are fun to shoot but I'm looking at getting a Ruger 10/22 because of all the aftermarket stuff available. |
Remington bolt with a 5-shot clip. I have used this since I was 12, and it is still fun as all get-out. 3 weeks ago I was plunking prairie dogs in Wyoming/Montana at 100-150 yards all day.

I've had or held just about every make and kind of gun there is, including 22s and I'm here to tell U Legion that the Ruger 10/22 is a great gun for the money.
Lots of fun plinking for the money, and if U should run over it with your car...well you don't cry over it, U just buy another. They have been mkin em for 50 years or so now. With 22s, its what do U want...Pump, single shot, lever, auto, or bolt action. For a pump....Winchester MDL 61...they are getting pricey, havn't been made since the 60s. or a Remington mdl 12..more reasonably priced , U can go with a Rossi copy of the Win mdl 90..Gallery Guns, they are made in Brazil. These type of 22s are good for short to medium range hunting and plinking. Single Shots...Winchester Low Wall Mdl 85..called the Winder, was used by the US Military as a training rifle during WW1..they come in 22 LR and 22 Short. These are getting to be over 1K now, Very Accurate, also BSA makes a Martini Henry version 22LR, these can be had for about $400...Thad Scott has dozens to choose from...these are very accurate Lever guns..Winchester 94/22...these are now discontinued and are around $600 to $800..get a deluxe. or get a Marlin...the older models have a solid feel and are still reasonabley priced. As with the Pumps these are short to medium hunts and plinkers...I like the Winchester and kinda wish I hadn't of sold it... Auto Loaders, Ruger 10/22..cheap and fun to shoot, Win mdl 63..discontinued in the 60s, great quality, pricey at $900, but there is a copy of the rifle being made..Browning...they still make this gun in Japan, a Beligum gun is a Beauty for $600, Remington makes a ***** load of auto loadeing 22s, I had a 121 which was a licensed copy of the Browning...These guns are great for plinking and short to med range hunting. But not terribly accurate at longer distances. Bolts. Here is where the meat is...Springfield Arsenal mdl 1922 MI, MIIs...made for the US Military as training rifles in 1922 up through WW2..Springfield made some dam fine International Match Target Rifles in the 20s and 30s..they only made 6 in 22LR...the reason the Mdl 1922s were so accurate that they didn't need to make specailized Target guns in 22. These can be had for $900-$2000. The 1922 Springfield was superceded in accuracy by the Winchester mdl 52..a good heavy barrel 52 can be had for $900 to $1300, the Sporter version is up around $3000. The Remington 37...Rem version of the Win 52 superceded by the Rem model 40..when U can find a mdl 37 they are $750. Nice rifle, Kimber mdl 82..an Oregon gun from the 80s is real nice...Super America...but its gona cost U $1500 at least. Browning 52..nice Jap made copy of the Win 52 Sporter...talk about value for about $650 you got de Bomb. Ruger 77/22...like all Ruger products good value for the money, can be considered to be a little rough around the edges. Stevens 416..another price point hvy Barrel tgt 22, also used by the US military during WW2 as a training rifle...I currently have one of these for sale. My choichs...10/22 for easy no brainer plinking, Win 52 Heavy Barrel for some serious tgt work, and a Browning 52 Sporter for a nice 22 Sporter.. also would like the Oregon Kimber for a little pricer gun. |
here's my .22
it's a glenfield (marlin) mod 60 w/ el-cheapo tasco scope. no idea how old it is.....going to do some research though. edit: going by serial number searching online it looks like it was made in 1970..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1162518305.jpg |
That brings back memories Bell. (even though I bought two Marlins for my daughters, I miss my old Glenfield that I had as a kid in the '70s. It got stolen from my parents home while I was in college). Hey, what was that serial number? haha
|
they sold these at sears from what i've come up with so far, they currently retail used between $35-$75.....$80+ if it has the stock scope.
i love this little rifle, i've had it for about 15 years. JP shot it when he and ronnie met us in upper PA. |

When I went shopping for a .22, which I had not owned in many years, I wanted something substantial. I settled on a Winchester model 9422. Color case hardened receiver, hand checkered buttstock and forend. I've since mounted a scope on it. http://images15.fotki.com/v262/photo...SCN0434-vi.jpg They don't make the one I have anymore, but here's what they have now. http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/catalog/category.asp?cat=004C Browning may make the ultimate .22 semi-automatic rifle on the planet. http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=022B&cat_id=021&type_id=001 |
Check out HenryRepeatingArms. I've got a .22 Carbine my wife gave me and just got a .22 Youth Model for my 10 year old for Christmass. $200.00 to $225.00 thru your local gun dealer or WalMart. Pretty cheep for brand new made here. Much nicer than expected. Between my cousins and my brothers there were 9 of us shooting up the western Catskills in the summers. Lots of lever actions. These Henrys lever smoother than all the others. I'm on my third brick of .22lr, with a bunch of odd boxes thrown in with no problems, no deterioration of smooth function. As a bonus, the Carbine is small enough to hang in the rear window of your 911 and swing around in the interior!

wow that .22 winchester was sweet. grab anything you can from winchester!!! they are out of biz! if you are at garage sale and someone has a winchester any caliber JUMP ON IT! obviously the older the better. do not reblue unless in really really sad shape. original blueing on winchesters is very desireable. any commerative winchester will be going thru the roof especially if NIB/unfired. could not believe what my (3) 1894-1994 100 yr aniv. models were going for and what i had originally paid for them.
winchester 30/30 have been the demise of more deer than any gun ever produced! i have an original winchester complete M-1 carbine, exact same as what my dad carried in the south pacific. any winchester firearm from the 40's is very collectible. |

I'm not in total agreement re Winchester values jumping. There has been a spike due to the plant closing but I'm not sure it will continue for all the post-64's. There's a few dogs in the pre's also, 24 and 67A come to mind. Buy something you like the look and feel of, feel good if it increases in value over time. I can think of better ways to invest money. I don't want to be thought of as a 'dealer of death' but have held a FFL since '85, transfer 1200 or so/year. Hard to keep those 10/22's on the shelf. Jim |

It's one of the most honorable professions in America. Additionally, Winchester isn't out of business, they closed the plant in the North East, was that New Haven or something like that? The rifles and shotguns are being made someplace else. |
Thanks Pat!
I could tell the subscribers to this thread would tend to be on my side of the fence re gun owning. Tough to make money by making firearms. Your product lasts 100 years, very little performance improvement in the last 100 years. Jim |
hell i never buy a gun to make profit, my kids may. but prices have gone up. sad to see another american icon go by the wayside. always enjoyed winchester commeratives when they came out. the website showing all the different items they made over the years is astounding.
cant go wrong with a 10/22 or a marlin. |
Very pretty rifle. Pat. I have always been a sucker for color case hardening, fine blueing, and quality wood. Way more pinache than black plastic and stainless steel.
9422's were not affected by the New Haven closure because they have been made by Miroku (spelling?) in Japan for years. The center-fire 94's and Model 70 bolt guns are gone, at least for now. Look for a comeback soon, probably made offshore. That may be a tough sell; riflemen tend to be more traditional as far as "be American, buy American" than most consumer groups. Building a pair of American icons like the M94 and M70 somewhere else is going to upset a lot of people. |
.22's are great guns. Very economical to shoot. My rifle is a Marlin .22 with a clip in the bottom; holds around 9. I also have an old, hexagon barrel, pump rifel from Remmington; Shoots .22 shorts.
Also have a Ruger six shooter with intrechangeable cylinders for shorts, longs and magnums. .22 mags are pretty powerful. My favorite .22 is my Ruger bull barrel pistol. Competition sights and trigger springs. Hair trigger so respect is needed. I have lost some of the accuracy I used to have but I am still very good with it. I can skip a can across the field..hit it the second it lands, sending it flying up again. We use to shoot at pennies and quarters from 30-50 foot. Only center shots counted. |
Well, I decided to get a Remington 597. The Ruger 10/22 is probably a better gun (and I will probably get one some day), but I really couldn't beat the price on the 597. They paid me $20 to take it. ;)
