How do you like the HUD? We have it on the plane I am flying now and the damm thing is more in the way than anything else. Nice for mins approaches but otherwise a pain in the neck on our bird. |
Joe, I like the HUD, but some of our pilots don't care for it. I tend to like expensive high-tech toys.

BlueSideUp, nice Stinson Gullwing. Good luck getting there. I have found that if you constantly envision the goal, that you will definitely get there. Don't ask me how it works, it just does. Put a picture of that beauty in your flight bag and look at it on a regular basis.

From a couple of formation junkies, we talked the instructors in to letting us fly some close formation. The picture above was not. They have never done that before and had a ball.

Scott, I would love to do the seaplane thing, but in Ohio, there are only a couple of bodies of water that it is legal to operate a seaplane out of.
Ticks me off as I live just a short distance from a river that would be perfect. Up north in Michigan, seaplanes are welcome and legal on most bodies of water. If I lived in Michigan, I would be all over the seaplane thing. I have had a blast in the winter with my Minimax on skiis. One can land just about anywhere with decent snow cover. Nothing like freaking your buddies out on Saturday morning after an all night snowfall, by taxing up in their backyard and banging on their rear sliding glass door demanding to be let in for coffee! |
Love the Cub on floats! What fun!!! Oh heck, any J3 is fun....open door, window, throttle back, fly the Interstate and watch cars pass you....or fly along with trains in the desert...

Collins displays. The Challenger 604 is all 6000 series Collins. Cannot wait until the 605 comes out as it will have LCD displays that are almost double the size and much easier to see. These work fine but you always like the newest stuff.
I love the techie stuff as well, am a EFIS/FMS instructor and electronic nut myself. It helps to build computers for a hobby, as you can understand how the FMS systems work easier. Photo of what the big screens look like on a Falcon. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1162571905.jpg |
Do you have a lot of CRT screen failures on the 604? About five years ago we had them all the time in the CL-65, one would just go blank in cruise. Usually powering down once on the ground or reracking would solve the issue.
The HUD looks like it would cut into the headroom when stowed on a Challenger. Despite the infrequent use I think it would be better than doing an exchange of controls at 100' AGL on a Cat II. We train for it that way but it's still more than a little tense. I've also heard that the 604 doesn't have the same ECP selections as the CL65. Something from the back of my mind says the HYD and ELEC pages don't show the same detail. The only 604 I've ever looked at was a corporate aircraft for Boeing. The 605 seems to have a lot of nice improvements.... The pax will certainly appreciate the larger windows at a normal height. Those large LCD displays would be nice for those mornings climbing into the sunrise, the CRTs tend to wash out quite a bit. Perhaps if they can get the Collins FMS to require less than 50 keystrokes to enter a temperature..... :) T6d--- It's definately a goal of mine. A guy a few hangars down from my old man has a full load of round sound....two Stearmans and a Beech Staggerwing. I haven't been back there in years but I'll never forget watching the ground runs on the Staggerwing after restoration. I did my tailwheel in a Voyager and a Champ. So far I don't have a lot of tailwheel time. I'll probably start out with something like a Citabria or a Super Cruiser before looking seriously at something like the Gullwing. |

On our FMS I can do temps in two keystrokes. Your EICAS pages have a bit more information that ours do. Your radio control panels are in different places than on our birds, otherwise most of the stuff is the same. I have lost less than 10 display tubes in 8 years of flying the 604, so its not an issue with us. That said, the 605 will do away with that using the LCD screens. If your screens return after sitting for a while they have a heating issue. Reach down underneath and see if you can find the holes where the fans are on each screen. Be careful as the fan can bite your fingers. Check if there is any carpet fuzz or other debris clogging the screen and cutting off cooling air. |

My father bought one in the mid 70's and we owned it for 26 years, although I never checked out in it. :( He was actually one of the early key board members of the Staggerwing Club in Tullahoma, TN and we are still involved today (both of us are board members). I fulfilled a dream in the late 90's and got to burn a whole tank of gas out of one at Edwards. They have (had?) a program where civvies brought out a unique airplane and flew with the test pilot school students for a week. We brought out a Lockheed Loadstar. Stayed at the BOQ, drank with the school instructors at the O Club, had a ball. Our payment was getting to fly the -38, from the front seat, no less. :D To make it better, a very good friend of mine was in the back seat. I got to do what ever I wanted - and I mean anything. :D :D :D I even got a formation t/o, flew formation, and three t/o and landings. He filmed video from the back seat, so I get to enjoy it anytime I want. An experience I will never duplicate or forget. ;) |
