"The Rev. Ted Haggard admitted Friday he bought methamphetamine and received a massage from a gay prostitute who claims he was paid for drug-fueled trysts by the former head of the National Association of Evangelicals. "

AND PEOPLE WONDER WHY EVANGLICALS ARE VIEWED AS BEING FULL OF *****?!?!?!!?!?

Reminds me of a joke I heard.
An evangelist, a male prostitute, and an elephant walk into a bar....

It seems there is a never ending story about clergy men being accused of gay or pedophile activities. Not least among Catholics.
I can explain this - at least as far as American Catholics are concerned. As long as I can remember, young gay catholic men have been encouraged to go in to the clergy as a way of "dealing" with their "problem". Frankly, it has never made an ounce of sense to me. But there it is. I've seen it happen. Still can't imagine why anybody thinks it does anybody any good.

Jim Richards 11-03-2006 11:22 AM

Seriously?

Point_Out_Truth 11-03-2006 11:30 AM

This illustrates an important point. Matthew 7:1-2 doesn’t mean don’t judge at all it just means don’t be a hypocrite.

Matthew 7:1-2 (King James Version)

Matthew 7
1Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

Romans 1:27-28 (King James Version)

27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

---

1 Corinthians 5:9-13 (New International Version)

9I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

12What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you."[a]

Yes, seriously. I haven't been an active catholic since the mid-80's so I don't know if it is still happening. But when I was growing up in NJ in the 70's it was considered the norm. And yeah, I totally knew guys who expressed gay desires and were immediately steered directly towards the seminary. Again, I can't explain it. I can only report what I saw.

It made the Vatican's recent decison to bar gay men from the seminary all the more bizarre to me. OTOH they encourage gay men to join and then ban them. WTF? I understand is was a knee jerk reaction to the recent scandals. But it felt like intellectual whiplash.

I was being sarcastic. Some in this thread have intimated that this breaking scandal is politically motivated.

Moneyguy1 11-03-2006 03:38 PM

Dave

This time of year, the "silly season", everything is looked at as being politically motivated.

That is why it is called the silly season!!!

dafischer 11-03-2006 07:36 PM

Unfortunately, I find that most of the sheeple take it way too seriously for it to be called "silly" anymore.

Moneyguy1 11-03-2006 08:48 PM

Dave You may be right. In my relatively long life, I have never seen so much being said about so little. It is as if we must just fill space with opinion, anger, and partisanship, like teenagers have to have a cellphone surgically implanted just to escape being with themselves.

Rodeo 11-04-2006 04:34 AM

It's the new Repub tactic -- get caught red-handed? Attack those that caught you as "partisan!"

As we now know, there is a core 25-35% that will swallow anything.

(yes, Haggard among them, but for different reasons :))
