can anyone recommend a good one, which is easy to use, affordable and has common automotive type symbols?

Try the free download at http://www.pad2pad.com/ - its a custom pcb maker, don't know if it will have what you want...

Here is one that I have used. It has a free version with some limitations but the full version is affordable. I don't know about the automotive symbols but I bet they have a downloadable library.

Easy GUI, schematic, simulation and then buy a PCB package if you like it.
