I'm 41 & had my first admittance to a hospital 2 weeks ago for a badly abused gallbladder. They shot me up with 2mg of Diluadid (YAY heavy narcotics) every 2 hours for 2 days then cut the poor thing out. I should be fully detoxed by tomorrow from all the narcotics I've been on, I've heard it takes 4 days.
I'm not a good patient & my wife, who works at the hospital, was pissed about my behavior after I woke up in recovery until they released me 1.5 hours later. I just wanted the hell out of there & wasn't listening to any BS excuses. Next time I'll go to a different hospital to save my wife any embarrassment, hopefully not for another 41 years.

+1 on glucosamine. take it daily, not just hear and there. makes a hell of a difference for a 40-year old weight trainer who lifts 5 days a week.

getting older
I'm 51 and I don't ski the bumps like I used to. I still work out and am thinner now than when I was in my 40's. I wake up with more aches and pains and I tend to fall asleep when watching TV. Other than that I'm still the same old me. Listen to your body, but don't give up on staying active.

At my age I find sixteen ounce curls help eliminate pain... just keep your elbow on the bar and a firm grip on the glass.

If you try glucosamine, stick with it for a couple of months. A dozen years of playing soccer had really left my knees in bad shape. My wife bought me a bottle of glucosamine and opened it so I wouldn't be able to return it. I was convinced it was a waste of time and money. A month or so later my knees really started feeling better. I've taken it daily since.

Ok so it's nearly 2 years later...I'm approaching 46 (November)...I don't know how I'm going to make it to 60+. My knees and shoulders are ruined. I can't run anymore and lifting weights feels good at first but once the muscles relax I'm in more pain again. I hate downing 800 mg of IBU before doing anything physical. I cannot rise from a seated position without a groan. I'm going to give the Costco Joint Juice a try.

Lifting weights and running are really bad for you. You put strain on joints that aren't meant to have that kind of shock. Try low impact like yoga. I know several people who used to run who now have rebuilt knees.

David - ride a bike, walk or swim. Running isn't that good for older bodies.

Truth...a sad one. NOBODY beats father time. Not even a guy putting on a Jets uniform...
(edit) The age related body changes don't end your life, they just alter it.

Tai Chi - I'm doing a class twice a week. Contrary to popular belief, it isn't just slow movements...depends on the style and the particulars. We're doing push hands right now and the sparring is pretty aerobic, even though you don't move your feet
![]() Had to go to ortho to get a shot in my shoulder for bursitis/tendonitis that wouldn't go away. Hurts to put on a jacket. I still manage to ride the bike every day though, and pedal the bicycle to meditation on Sunday's. Need to get the bicycle offroad too with the boy. |

Definitely don't run, and anyone younger, heed that now. I used to do Harvard Stadiums (up and down each set of steps there and back) and could do a sub 5 minute mile in my prime. Knees are really starting to feel it these days. in September I'm devoting some real time to rehabilitating my knees.

I hear this all the time, but then I show up at a local 5k race and there's a bunch of old people entered that have been running for decades and they're perfectly fine. I'd rather run for the next 40 years and maybe have some knee pain than vapor lock in 20 years from sitting on the couch.
I started running about two years ago (at age 42) and have had zero problems. My advice - if you're going to run, invest in some good shoes and replace them often.

Somehow I still think of myself as being 25-30 and very fit - then someone takes a picture of me and I am shocked how old & fat I look. Or like I said - rise from a seated position and feel every joint and muscle complain.I love running because all you need, other than healthy knees and back, is a pair of running shoes and a spare 40 minutes. We are very fortunate to live in a city that enforced a very extensive recreational trail system as developments grew. Just out my front door there's 25+ miles of compressed dirt trails linking the various home developments, schools, parks, and downtown shopping areas. Other than infrequent street crossings I don't have to deal with concrete and cars. I despise swimming so that's out. I continue to bike and will have to pick up the pace there I guess. Still, I'm going to try a glucosamine for a couple months in hopes of gaining a bit of relief. |

At 43 Im still doing most of the activities I did back in my 20's. I'm probably in better shape and condition then most of the 20 somethings in my firehouse. The only problem now, is when I push myself , the recovery time is a little bit longer. I'm starting to feel old injuries from way back.
