Pics from El Salvador and Honduras

Hi Everyone...

I am exploring Central America right now. Anyone interested in pictures from El Salvador and Honduras can find more of them them here.

It seems pretty safe. Just follow normal care and be aware of your surroundings!

Steam is from thermal (Volcanic) activity in the area.

Sky wire ride through the rain forest canopy. About 15 wire segments, varying from 100 to 800 meter runs.
No insurance waver to sign. Fun, but, kind of dangerous too!

That looks awesome! How do you clip in? Can you regulate your speed?

While your down in Honduras, try to get to Roatan. Plan on hanging out on West Bay Beach for a few days. Not much to do, but the water and sand are fantastic.

Well whaddayaknow!! My wife and I just got back two weeks ago from a week in Honduras and El Salvador (mostly Honduras)! Central America is such a beautiful region. My wife and I spent a week in Costa Rica last year and fell in love with that place.

We stayed at an Eco-lodge in Honduras called the Lodge at Pico Bonito. It's in a rain forest at the base of the 8,500 foot Pico Bonito mountain. It rained like heck for hours every day but that was to be expected. It is a rain forest after all. Six miles away, on the coast, it tended to stay dry most of the day.

My wife and I hiked through the jungles down there, down to two different rivers, each on either side of a single high ridge. We saw huge leaf cutter ant nests and the 6" wide cleared trails left by the ants for hundreds of yards. Amazing. We saw Howler monkeys, White faced monkeys, bats, snakes, iguanas, etc. We even saw hundreds of beautiful butterflies.

We took a day trip out to the island chain that includes Roatan (We took a little fishing boat/skiff and launched right out through the waves out to sea for thirty miles. That was interesting, but not as interesting as trying to come back in through those same waves later that afternoon) and spent some time with the villagers in the coastal villages.

All I can say is what an awesome experience!

Of course, my wife just HAD to take a picture with a couple of the local army types with their loaded automatic weapons.

A REAL jungle cruise (as opposed to Disneyland's version)

I was in Honduras twice in the late 80's with the US Army building the road across the country to make up for the fact that Carter gave away the Panama Canal. The areas I was in were dirt poor (dirt floor huts and oxen powered sugar cane mills) but it was beautiful country (in the mountains). If you venture off the beaten path avoid eating the food (including the cheap stalks of bananas being sold along the side of the road!) and drinking the water if you do not want to spend every ten minutes on the toilet or with an IV stuck in your arm due to severe dehydration from the hershey squirts. BTDT!

I owned a place in Costa Rica for years, drove from California to Costa Rica. I loved the drive except in El Salvador. I doubt I will ever be in that country again. I would like to do the drive again but Next time I will drive through Guatamala to Honduras and skip El Salvador. I loved everyplace else.

Honduras is a beautiful country. My friend's dad grew up there and recently went back. He's been trying to get us to come down for a couple years now, and I think we're going over the summer. Actually, to be more accurate, 2 or 3 of my friends are moving there, and I'm just going for the summer for now.

I used to have some really good pics he sent but I can't seem to find them now.

If any of you guys make it to La Ceiba, Honduras be sure to stop by a bar and grill called "Expatriates" for good food, drink, and cigars. The owners are great people.

Also, check out honduras.com for good Honduras resources and what not.

The lodge we stayed at is just outside La Ceiba. My wife and I almost went to the bar you mentioned to watch a MNF foootball game but just couldn't be bothered to get the off our butts to go there.
