I know there are plenty of you guys out there who can answer that for me.
I have a home video that I'd like to install onto my hard drive. The reason is that I'd like to take a small clip of that and post it onto You Tube for everyone's enjoyment. I am getting nowhere with this, however. I'm about ready to take both of my computers and smash them with a sledge hammer!! ![]() |

If it is a commercial type DVD format DVD Decrypter works pretty well.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD_Decrypter It sounds like it might be a DVD from a camcorder. If so, what type camcorder and recording mode were used? Maybe a few more details would help. If the video is meant to be captured through the Firewire PC port I have had good luck with ScenalyzerLive. http://www.scenalyzer.com/main.html Of course both of these run on a Windows system.

The video was captured on a MiniDV camcorder initially. I own a DVD/VCR recorder for the TV that I am able to hook my camcorder directly into using a variety of different cable setups. I simply burned a disk directly from the camcorder's miniDV tape while it was running in the playback mode.
The DVD runs fine on the DVD player and on the PC I'm on right now(running Win2000). It doesn't seem to be able to run on the Laptop for some reason (which is much newer than the PC and runs on WinXP). |

Can you plug your cam into your laptop? XP has some built in software that may do what you need...
Or, take the tape and put it between the two computers before you slam them together. This may get the video into one of your computers ![]() Dave

Dave, unfortunately for me, neither one of these units will accept video directly. The PC was a low end unit five+ years ago (so it's a real piece of you know what now) but it does have a big new hard drive and decent memory. The laptop is only about 18 months old but is also a bottom end unit.
From what I can gather it seems as if I need to cough up about $40 to buy some dedicated DVD ripping software. I was just hoping one of you guys would have another suggestion. |

What brand /model laptop do you have? The DVD you burned should work. But, as you say, does not.

Does your laptop have Sonic?
Also, if your laptop has Windows Movie Maker, you should be able to feed the camcorder into it and make it into a .wmv file.

The laptop is a Gateway 4024GZ with a CD burner and DVD ROM capability. It has Windows Movie Maker installed.
The PC in the other room has a DVD burner installed. |

Plays on the DVD player but not the PC.
Most likely a CODEC issue. CODEC ='s compression/decompression schema. You need to figure out which CODEC the DVD burner used and make sure you have the same or compatable on your PC. For a general CODEC that supports most DVD try Divx, http://www.divx.com/ Or put the DVD in, if your PC recognizes it as media and allows you to open and view the files then you can use something like mpeg streamclip, http://www.squared5.com/ to demux the file into something that you can deal with. On the DVD you will be looking in the VIDEO_TS folder for the .VOB file. Scott

Scott,
Is your camera firewire compatible? If so, your laptop has firewire built in. You would only need the correct cable to connect the two. MS should be able to download the video and you should be able to turn it into a movie. Dave

If the camera supports firewire which most DV do then that is the simplest route. Scott

Thanks guys. Yea, I've got the firewire cable and use it once in a while. In this cse, however, I converted the MiniDV tape over to VHS tape about five years ago and then just recently burned a copy onto a DVD from the VHS tape. The MiniDV has long since been erased.
No worries though because I decided to try a simple drag and drop of all the files from another similar DVD with a similar video to the laptop's hard drive and, whadaya know, it worked. The files play just fine on the laptop. However, when I tried to use Windows Movie Maker to create a short video clip from the larger video, it didn't recognize the .VOB format. Any suggestions there? |
