A little OT but my best friend in this whole world was promoted to officer in the south Vietnamese army when he was 16. He doesn't talk about it much but a few times he's told me a little bit about what it was like, it gives me nightmares and I am not making that up. I'm a veteran, but I have never considered veterans day to be "for me". To me, it was always to honor those who served in combat (or combat by other names), those who fell in their service, and especially those MIA who never came back at all.
My service, though honorable, was unremarkable. Do not honor me.

I agree with the sailor, veterans day is for all the troops.
When and where shots get traded is not really up to us, so anyone that serves does so with the very real possiblity that someday we will get blown to many small pieces. So IMO the day applies to all troops past and present. |
