Hit and Run in the Parking Lot

What is the world coming to? I am in the Dallas area this weekend for my kid's birthday party. My father and I head over to the local grocery store this morning to pick up the birthday cake and balloons. Anyhow, we come out and are loading up my Tahoe when this guy comes up to me and says that a truck hit my parked Tahoe. The driver got out, looked at the dent, got back into his truck and drove to another area of the parking lot to park. This witness wrote down his license plate number and a description of the truck on one of his business cards. I thanked him and took a look at the driver's rear quarter panel. Sure enough, there is a sizeable dent. I probably wouldn't have noticed it for a day or so, but it is fairly large.

Anyhow, my father and law and I decide to drive around the lot just to see if the truck is still there....sure enough, we find the truck. I park right next to him and we wait. I got out of my truck and took a photo of his front bumper (with my paint on it) with my cell phone. About 10 minutes later, the guy comes out of the store and starts to load up his truck. I walk over and the following conversation occurs:

"Hi there. I'm the owner of the red Chevy Tahoe that you hit about 15 minutes ago."

"What??"

"Yeah, I have an eye witness who wrote down your license plate number and description of your truck. He said you hit my driver's rear quarter panel with your bumper and then drove off."

"Where was this?"

"Right over there, across the lot. He said you hit my truck, then drove your truck over to another area of the lot."

"That's wierd, I don't remember hitting your truck."

"Well, I have a witness that says you did. I also have a picture of my paint on your front bumper in my cell phone."

**At this point he walks up to his bumper and inspects the mark on the bumper, rubbing it like it was the first time he saw it.**

"So, can I have your insurance information?"

"I really don't remember hitting your truck."

"Gee, that's wierd because the eye witness said you got out of your truck, inspected the dent in my truck and then got back into your truck to drive off. You don't remember that either?"

**Silence**

"So, you can either give me your insurance information or I can call the police. It's your choice."

"I'll get my insurance information for you."

The thing that pisses me off is that they guy hit my truck, left and then tried to lie to me about it! I don't care that you dent my truck, accidents happen. At least be a man about it and leave your information so I can get the dent fixed. The thing probably will cost less than $200 to get fixed, but this guy tried to weasel out of a measley $200...pathetic.

probably a scum sucking liberal

oh wait, you're in Dallas...can't be that ;)

People suck.

Nathans_Dad 11-11-2006 06:00 PM

There are plenty of liberals in Dallas, don't you worry.

Course, if he was a true liberal he would have told me how he was just a victim of the system and if he only had gotten more government assistance he would have grown some morals during childhood...

:p

Moneyguy1 11-11-2006 06:04 PM

Libeals can't exist in Dallas....You have Walker, don't you?

Porschephile944 11-11-2006 06:05 PM

A few months ago someone hit the back bumper of my "daily driver" in the parking lot at college. They took of a nice chunk of paint but didn't leave any dents. The scumbag didn't even leave a sorry note. Things like this really make you wonder about what happened to that scumbags basic manners.

speeder 11-11-2006 06:12 PM

You should have called the police as soon as you realised that he was still on the premises. You handled it well, I would have asked him if he would remember it if I just backed into his truck at about 20 mph and drove off. After getting out to inspect the damage, of course.

So I guess that you have punks in Texas, huh?

Nathans_Dad 11-11-2006 07:07 PM

Oh yeah, we have more than our share of punks in Texas.

The thing that floored me was that he actually tried to lie his way out of it, even when I said up front I had an eye witness who wrote down his license plate. Unbelievable.

Joeaksa 11-11-2006 07:27 PM

Unbelieveable. I would also write a letter of what he did to his insurance company after its all over, and ask them if this is the type of customer they really want to have.

That kind of crap drives me crazy, especially because it happens often. So many people in this world were never taught responsibility by their parents. What really gets my goat is if it would've happened to him he probably would have been screaming for someone's head. ******* hypocrites.

Along those lines, a couple of months ago I left my 996 in an airport parking garage for a few days. When I came back and approached my car it looked like a nice Mercedes was awfully close to the front of my car. When I looked to see just how close this moron had gotten I was friggin shocked to find the car bumped right up against mine - his bumper up against the fairly soft and flexible plastic "bumper" that 996's have. I was livid! I gave his nice new Mercedes a full power karate kick with my heel to the side of his fender (no damage to that tank, of course) and then left him a nice angry nasty-gram on his windshield asking him to pay a little more attention to how he parked in the future.

This sheit makes my blood boil!! Sorry that it had to happen to you, buddy.

HardDrive 11-11-2006 08:27 PM

No damage, but I had some a55hole park their car literally 3 inches from the drivers side of my car. I had to get in the passenger side and crawl over. I let a nice note on their windshield.

What the f*ck is wrong with people? If I damaged someones car, I would repair the damage. How can people just drive away and not feel like complete pieces of ***** about it?

You handled it well nathans_dad. I might not have been as cool headed.

To quote a famous person: "People are basically scum".

A few months ago my wife and I were sitting in my car in the hospital parking lot while my wife fed the baby. A man and a woman drove up the row in front of us and the guy tries to park two stalls adjacent from me. Well he side swipes this white Toyota pretty good and dented it half the length of the car leaving a blue line. Then he backs up and hits a brand new ford pick-up truck leaving a dent in the bumper. So I'm watching to see what he does. The guy parks, they get out of the car and start examining the damage on both the car and the truck and they're looking around for witnesses. My wife and I watched in disbelief as they both walked off into the hospital. I wrote the license plate down and was getting ready to leave notes on the cars but by chance both owners of the hit vehicles came out. So I told them what happened and gave them my business card. Unbelievable.

Several years back, a woman decides she has to parallel park between my car and my buddies truck. As we stood by, she proceeded to hit my bumper, then the other bumper, then mine, this his, etc. This went on about 8-10 times.

No real damage occured, but both of us were pissed, since she just kept doing it. We tried to talk to her but she just walked past us with her 2 kids. So, we called the Police. They finally got her to open her door. She then turns out to have an expired Arkansas license and no insurance! (This was in Upstate NY). The cops asked her why she had to park there and she says that where she is from you have to park in front of your own property, you can't park in front of someone else's property. We all basically thought she was crazy and had to let it go...

Porsche-O-Phile 11-12-2006 05:47 AM

Congrats to you - that's a ballsy thing to do confronting someone and sticking to your guns like that. It paid off for you. Shame it forced you into that situation, but I'm glad it paid off.

FWIW I'd still stop by the police station and have a chat with one of the officers on duty just to see if the guy might be guilty of hit-and-run anyway (since he DID leave the scene without leaving a note or contact information, albeit before you caught up with him). You might be able to stick it to this guy once for making his insurance pay for his screwup and again with an arrest warrant for hit-and-run. I say do it. It's clear that this guy would've weaseled out given even half the chance.

sammyg2 11-12-2006 07:54 AM

He is a POS and he will contunue to lie about it. he will tell his insurance company that he didn't do it. You are in for a great big long drawn out hassle.
You should have immediately called the police to report a hit-and-run.
You should have pressed charges and had him arrested.
That way he would not be able to weasel out of it.
Nice guys (republicans) get taken advantage of.

My 944 was hit in a parking lot, and knocked sideways partways into the spot next to it, someone was realy mad at my parking ability when they saw me. I walked them over to the other side of the car, and pointed out where I'd been hit.

If someone had of beaten my car in while I was inside - and I'd parked it nicely and centered, on top of it getting smacked by another car, I'd not be very happy. Sometimes theres a reason they are over the edge.

Nathans_Dad 11-12-2006 11:13 AM

I reported the incident to his insurance immediately. Their adjuster is supposed to call me on Monday or Tuesday. I still have the witness' phone number, if he tries to weasel out I will call the McKinney police and see if it qualifies as a hit and run. Hopefully the guy will realize when it is time to do the right thing...

IROC 11-12-2006 02:15 PM

I don't think that calling the police would have done any good since the incident occurred on private property. A co-worker's wife was t-boned in the local mall parking lot by someone cutting across the parking lot (going perpendicular to the usual lanes) and when they called the police, they said that unless there was an injury, they wouldn't respond. And they didn't. The person who was at fault denied the whole thing to their insurance company and it ended up in court...

My 911 was parked on a local street while my wife was in the gym; Someone trying to do a 3 point turn I assume put a nice dent in the rear quarter panel in front of the rear wheel. No note.

So, I called the police and reported a hit and run. Unfortunately they were unable to find the culprit and since the day it happened was also the day of the local car show (2 years ago) we had a lot of our of towners that day. The investigating officer did a pretty decent investigation though; checked the local auto shops for repairs related and monitored the street for a few days for a car with the right color paint and height of bumper. When we called them they responded but if they hadn't we simply would have walked over an made the report at the station. You always have that option if they can't repond to a non-injury accident.

You handled it well enough but I think that I would have called the police before he came out of the store to see if they wanted to catch him. :D

Jeff Higgins 11-12-2006 03:57 PM

In my town, police will not respond to a non-injury, non-blocking accident. They will, however, sit on their asses for hours with a radar gun...
