TV Purchase-Sony XBR??
I am in the market for a new LCD TV(42"). I am somewhat at a loss with all the new technology. I have only looked at Sony XBR televisions. I have been told they are one of the best but expensive.
Is it worth the extra dollars or is there something comparable that may be significantly less dollars. I guess I just want to know what a good TV is without doing all the homework. Picture quality and reliability are of course the two main considerations. Thanks. |

I did not know they had a 42. I bought the 46 and am quite pleased.

Prices on these TVs are falling so quick I would be hesitant to buy a top of the line model given the "depreciation" curve. The same set in 6 months will cost you much less.
Rather than paying big bucks for a 42 HDTV plasma, I bought a 42 EDTV plasma from Panasonic for $1300 (at the time in Jan 2006 I bought an open box from Circuit City...but now you can buy them new in a box for that price). With a digital signal (or DVD) it is hard to tell the difference in picture quality. The Panasonic has a built in QAM decoder so I get "HD" signals through plain old cable. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-EZEWhzWOYHa/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?I=13342pd60u&wm=cl

Think about the room in which you will have the TV. The research I did said that if the room is bright (i.e. lots of windows, etc.) then LCD was a better choice - plasma TVs tended to get washed out.
I ended up buying a 40" Sony Bravia - at Costco, for $1899. Identical set to the ones at Best Buy/Circuit City etc., though with a model # exclusive to Costco and $100 less than the other guys. And Costco's return policy is much better. Have had it about a month, along with digital cable and HD. The HD broadcasts are WOW. Just my .02 - YMMV

For LCD 1080p HDTV's , consumer reports rates the JVC LT-40FN97 and Sony Bravia KCL-40XBR2 at the top.
I am somewhat brand loyal and like the Sony KDL-40V2500, which is the lowest priced of the 1080p HDTV's. CU didn't do a test on this model, but it has the same features as the XBR2 but without the changable glass bezel. http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/sony-lcd-tv/sony-lcd.html Now if you want a plasma, not yet at 1080p native resolution, but has a better overall rating than the LCD, get Panasonic. http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/reviews.html Best Buy has the Sony KDL-40V2500 for $2250.00. Same for Circuit City. Online at J&R, you can get it for $2K. Last edited by abisel; 11-13-2006 at 03:10 PM.. |
