Shanghai Monday morning headlines....
This morning's headlines illustrate the growing westernization of the SEZ's in Mainland China......
'The Government of Shanghai has discovered that automobile manufacturers have misled buyers reguarding fuel mileage of their products.' 'After reaching the 65% completion point of the new airport at Pudong, Shanghai, the airport authority has discovered a species of frog is being displaced and all construction has been stopped .' At breakfast this morning, I overheard a pompous, bald liberal looking GaiJin telling a local municipal official that California had the best enviornmental standards in the world, and China would be the envy of the world to follow their lead..... I do feel sorry for these people. It has begun. |

I started coming here in 1992. Back then, mopeds outnumbered the cars (500 to one). All the cars were red (taxis).
Now? Private cars outnumber the taxis 200 to one. The driving rules are that you can do anything you want so long as a turn signal is on (either one), and you are deaf to the horns. Ever wonder where all the world's oil is going? It's coming here. They are willing to pay whatever the price is. After all, the government subsidizes it's cost for it's citizens. Part of that Communist thing. Shanghai is where it happens first in Mainland China. |

the espresso at the Crown Club Lounge wasn't bad this am...
I want hotpot though. And speaking of headlines, I was looking over a guy's shoulder on the flight over reading China Daily. Said that China's trade surplus (surplus? what's that?!?) increased again this year, and they now are #2 as world exporter of goods, passing Germany (US is still number one). Wonder what Alfred thinks of that? |

Get off the computer and get to sleep. You have another 10 hour day in front of the cadnium smelter to look forward to, Unless one o.k. with dirty buisness
![]() Why bother arguing about recycling tissue here, when whole villages are under toxic sludge over there. It just takes a little longer to drift over. Even the US gov. could learn from the Chinese in terms of environmental policy and internet-access restiction and modification. Someday...soon... One shouldn't let even a happy pit-bull lick one's face.

My cousin is in Shanghai at the moment, he commutes constantly because of his furniture business. He designs and manufactures really nice mass-produced modern pieces, plus has a lower-priced line that sells in Target stores and Home Depot(?) That's the stuff that gets made in China, the good stuff is made in the U.S.
He was just telling me about the price of RE there; he had been thinking about buying a nice condo since he's there so much and renting it to the company, but then he priced them and they were (not) cheap. |

Tuesday morning here. Todays' headlines....
"Terracotta Replicas Questioned." Seems some officially-sanctioned replicas made of the terracotta warriors from Xian may have been replicated themselves by 'questionable workmen'.... Unfortunately, the real replicas cannot be distinguished from the fake replicas. Shoppers beware.... "Two blind, elderly pedestrians run over and killed by speeding truck". There were no eyewitnesses. The truck driver was not charged. (I don't make this up... is literally from the front page....) "Shanghai man sentenced to death for online murder" Guy sitting in an internet bar surfing had his activities delayed by another man downloading a game from the USA. A fight broke out, and the surfer stabbed and killed the gamer. Gamer-murderer now to die next week. |

Small cars don't sell well in Shanghai because the city govt has a law prohibiting small cars on elevated highways. Don't ask why.
The Beijing govt says that's ridiculous, and the country needs to shift to small cars--preferably electric. Sound familiar?
