How do you stop a nine year old dog from licking young children <3?

My dog has always licked but we have trained her to leave us alone. But the kids either can't or don't want to stop her and it drives my wife nuts. So much so that she locks the dog in another room for periods. The dog will whine and scratch at the door.

I am worried that she is teaching the dog to resent the children and that can lead to bad things.

I told her we need a better way to deal with this. So what's a better way?

Stop salting your kids. :D

Or put some tabasco sauce on 'em.

Teach them to lick the dog back.




Simply say no everytime you catch her doing it.

Well, there was that tongue removal scene from Midnight Express. Ever see it? Works well across the animal species.

Thousands of no's have been shouted. Even smacks on her ass do next to nothing. It's as if she has weighed her options and the crime is worth the punishment.

Seriously, email that dog whisperer guy. Betcha' he has an answer. Google "Dog Whisperer" and go from there.

Teach the kids to yell NO with AUTHORITY, is my best stab at it. It worked for you, maybe it will work with the kids (at least your oldest one).

When he licks, grab his tongue and hold it for several seconds. Not mean or painful and it will eventually work. He'll learn that when he licks he won't like what happens.

Now all you PETA's can flame me....

What about when the dog's panting? I'm afraid it would restrict breathing, etc., even for several seconds.

Peanut butter on the roof of the mouth?

I grab around my dogs snout + jaw, causing her tongue to clamp between her teeth. Seems to work for about 10 minutes.

i stumbled upon this by accident and it worked. you must pay the price of a snotty hand until it catches on.

Your Dog loves the kids and is being maternal.

Get a shock collar appropriate for the size of the animal, read the instructiuons for disciplining the animal and follow the instructions. It may sound cruel but it will work. Basically when the dog gets introduced to the tone and shock and a command is given if the dog does not follow the command you use the tone to warn the dog and if she continues to pursue bad behavior your use the shock to reinforce stop behavior.

Believe me it works and it will not take long to resolve the bad behavior when done correctly. This is not over the top as far as correction, if your wife wants to stop the bad behavior and you want a well behaved animal/pet you will be very pleased with the results. Consult with your vet if you have any concerns.

Maybe try a spray bottle filled with water (try adding some lemon juice if pure water doesn't work). Most dogs wouldn't care for a mist/spray in the face and would soon get the message. And the suggestion to quit salting your kids does apply:) My dog loves to lick me when I've been prespiring, but not at other times...
