Question Bis. trip to Hampton VA. in May, should I volunteer to go?

Okay you worldly PPOT's help me with my travel plans. I have worked my way up the seniority ladder here at work so I pretty much don't have to travel if I don't want to. However next years travel schedule just came out and we are doing an install at the Virginia Air and Space Center in May, looking at their website it looks like a nice place and it is near Hampton Virginia.

So tell me all you know Hampton VA. in May, I dare you... I double dog dare you!!!

Hampton sucks. It's pretty ghetto. Where is the Virginia Air and Space Museum? NASA campus?

Personally, I would definitely go. A good time of year to go there. The azaleas would be blooming. Good seafood at Harpoon Larry's (Mercury Blvd). It is on the east end just off US 64 near where you cross the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk.....It is in the downtown area on the west side of the Hampton River on Settler's Landing Road, just before you cross the river toward Norfolk. there is a decent Radisson within a short walk as wll as a couple of bed and breakfasts.
As far as I know, it is nowhere near a NASA facility. The only NASA area I know of in Hampton is miles away adjoining Langley.

I say go - there are alot of things to do in that part of the state. Close to Williamburg. Close to Historic Yorktown and Yorktown National Battle field, where Cornwallis surrendered and also the site a civil war battle. Its pretty rare to find one site where both a revolutionary and a civil war battle were fought. A lot of history there.

+1 If you are into military museums, history, etc. it's definitely worth the trip. Virginia Military Museum is also in that area and is really interesting.

How true. When I lived in Virginia Beach, I hated to have to go there. It is like another world. Scumville...

Williamsburg is awsome and we make the trip once a year or more.

I'm very much into NASA and air museums, this I presume is the place (website not working as I post this {???} but did work yesterday):

http://www.vasc.org/

Looks like a cool place, don't get to the east much and like to get in as much American history whenever work sends me out that way. Loved seeing Boston, Philadelphia, DC... heck when I was in Orlando I skipped Disney and went to the Kennedy space center, St. Petersburg, and the old fort on the gulf side

The Museum pays for my airfare, hotel, and $40 per diem which about covers my bar tab.

My preliminary research shows this as the location, edit: link didn't work, I'll try google...Edit edit... this map link is now working. Any suggestions on where to get a hotel? Is this a horrible part of town? I'm Los Angeles born so I am pretty used to urban environments.

Would do it in a heartbeat if you like aviation stuff.

Anything NASA related, especially being behind the scenes in stuff that the normal public does not see would be fun.

Scott,

How long are you going to be there...there is a great deal to do a few hours drive from Hampton if you get a rental.

Hmmmm, still not sure... like I say I like to eat and drink well when I'm on the road so the $40 really does just cover my daily bar tab. Oddly they budget me around $100 a night for a hotel but they always screw me by trying to get the cheapest air fare possible (sucky flight times) not that big of a deal but it pisses me off. There s also a blizzard of paper work that accompanies every one of these trips that is a major PITA.

They give me two travel days and three install days, I'm the tech so I just show up, plug everything together then fix whatever doesn't boot up. The installers are there for two week so I usually let them pick the hotel but they know I'm a Internet geek and can find good places to stay so they will listen to me.

Fint, is there decent food and drink near that Raddison? The boys usually like to stay places that have mini kitchens (Days Inn's are very popular with them).

If I go I would definitely stay over a week or more, always wanted to see Williamburg. Ft. Eustis and Yorktown sound good too. Where would be a good town to stay that is close to all the historical stuff and not too expensive?

Thanks

Hampton is pretty central to all the places named and close to the airport. Check out the site for the closest hotel for info:
Radisson
Hampton has the usual bars and restraurants such as Outback, Hooters, etc.
