Reccomend me some good jazz fusion

Just recently discovered Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters.

Love this stuff. Was wondering if you all could suggest stuff in the same vein. Thanks

Return to forever - That's the name of the band.
Romantic warrior is a good album of theirs to start with, you can still get their CD's online at barns and noble.

Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior

Also, check out Adam Nitti. Great bass player (6 string) and a pretty decent PCA DE junkie as well.

Lots of great jazz pianists over the years. Try some early (or late) Chick Corea, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, Brad Mildahl, Alan Broadbent (personal favorites).

Current favorite is Laurence Hobgood, the accompanist for Kurt Elling (best current jazz vocalist). He hasn't cut a CD yet, but his piano solos on Elling's CDs are great.

BTW, all players I mentioned play straight-ahead jazz, not jazz fusion - so identified by synthesized EFXs and/or monotonous b.g. rythym created by a computer (maybe an overgeneralization). Hancock started out playing straight-ahead jazz. His later stuff sequed into fusion and EFX.

But it's whatever you like.

Jazz fusion is kind of a generic term.

I like "Weather Report"- the album "Heavy Weather" is pretty cool.
The cut "Rockin' in rhythm" is a nice redo on the Ellington tune from the 40's (?).

"Spyro Gyra"- also good.

Weather Report's "Heavy Weather" is a classic jazz album; probably a must in any jazz collection.

Spyro Gyra is okay for easy-listening jazz (e.g. Shaker Song).

Medeski Martin and Wood, especially their latest work with John Scofield!!

scottmandue 11-17-2006 09:08 AM

Oh wow... I'm going to have to dig out my weather reports CD's :D

There was a group names Camel but I think they are out of print... saw them live at the Roxy.

Nostril Cheese 11-17-2006 09:50 AM

Really dig Chameleon off the Headhunters album. Love that ARP sound.

Just downloaded Return to Forever and Weather Report. Thanks for the suggestions!

same here...

You should check out Down to the Bone... pretty funky stuff, yet still retaining the cheesyness of most fusion bands :) The "Urban Grooves Albumn" is particularly good.

azasadny 11-17-2006 12:04 PM

Let's see:

Jeff Lorber Fusion
The Crusaders
Jean-luc Ponty
Chick Corea
Medeski Martin and Wood
John Scofield

Jim Richards 11-17-2006 12:12 PM

Pat Metheny
Jaco Pastorius

azasadny 11-17-2006 12:14 PM

Jim,
Yes, Jaco is the king of the bass! Pat Metheny and John McLaughlin are also excellent, you have good taste!!

TheMentat 11-17-2006 12:28 PM

Almost forgot about this... I started a new thread on it:

Not labeled a "jazz fusion" band and I don't have any of there stuff but I saw Phish on TV and they had a very rock/jazz fusion sound.

scottmandue 11-17-2006 12:38 PM

I have some Pat Metheny CD's and his DVD of a concert in Japan and I saw him at the Greek Theater. I like his band but I wish he would change the sound of his guitar once in a while, it sounds cool but after about half an hour to forty five minutes it starts to wear a little thin.

Superman 11-17-2006 12:52 PM

I saw Stanley Clarke play and, being a former bass player, I was stunned. That guy answered my questions about how a standup bass might be useful.

rcecale 11-17-2006 12:57 PM

Has nobody heard of Simpleflower?

Word has it that one of our own Pelicans has a friend who knows someone related to the cousin of the bass player....something like that. ;)

Randy

911pcars 11-17-2006 01:30 PM

Jaco Pastorius, bass player extraordinaire, and mentioned earlier, was also a part of/leader of Weather Report.

azasadny 11-17-2006 02:45 PM

Todd Richmond is a bass player who played with Simpleflower and he's a fellow Pelican. He's very talented, I might add...

Nuyorican Soul
Some George Benson
Mark Farina

How about the recently departed Razor Lips himself...

Maynard Fergusen?

Not fusion, but an amazing horn player.

good jazz fusion is an oxymoron :p

Thanks for the props. But I hear that Simpleflower bassist is a little off his rocker if you know what I mean...

Ok, I'll soften my stance a bit. I like some fusion but it can get old. I had a casual gig at Cantor's about 6 months back that was a "fusion" thing (I knew the drummer from another casual). Incredibly boring gig...guitar player just wanting to shred over the same groove ad naseum. And normally on a "jazz" casual, especially a trio situation, the bass and drums take a solo on almost every tune, or at least trade fours. Not this one...guitar player just kept playing as many notes per minute as he could...

The seminal works have been mentioned, except for *****es Brew (Miles). I've never really cared for Metheney. Headhunters is a classic, and you could also check out Tribal Tech, Billy Cobham, and Jack Bruce (post Cream) and of course Jeff Beck. Marcus Miller is pretty amazing too...his last album (Silver Rain) has some gems including covers of Frankenstein, Power of Soul, Boogie on Raggai Woman, and Moonlight Sonata.

304065 04-03-2007 02:30 PM

I cannot believe that nobody mentioned Mahavishnu Orchestra, one of the seminal bands of the fusion movement.

BTW I found this thread by searching for "rocker arm groove."

greglepore 04-03-2007 04:20 PM

Most anything recorded by or produced by Marcus Miller... some of his stuff w/ David Sanborn is worth a listen.

David Spinoza guitar stuff, but its mostly out of print.

Sonic dB 04-03-2007 04:26 PM

John McLaughlin is great and a favorite of mine...
Not a big fan of Scofield.... plays same stuff over and over and lost me
the night he played a lame 1 hour set in AA for $30 cover charge.
But thats just me...

Pick up some Wes Montgomery to see where it all began

Joeaksa 04-03-2007 04:32 PM

Candy Dulfer just played here in Phoenix. Very nice sounds.

Been listening to jazz for eons and still cannot get enough of it...

stuartj 04-03-2007 04:41 PM

I can recommend a trio of discs from an independant label called Tone Center

Guitar Supreme
Fusion for Miles -A B1tchin Brew
Vision of an Inner Mounting Apocolypse (a piss take Im sure, compositions by McLaughlin)

Feature people like Eric Johnson, Warren Haynes, Jeff Richman, Steve Lukather, frank Gamabale, Pat Martino.

Great fusion compilation records, ball tearers.

Purrybonker 04-03-2007 05:06 PM

I lean more to the afrobeat -

I love the syncopation.

Feta Kuli and less so, his son Femi are my weapons of choice for a layback.
