Would you wait in line for a Wii?

Now the PS3 is out, the question has to be;

Would you wait in line for a Wii?

:D

widebody911 11-17-2006 06:19 AM

Wii would you?

Aerkuld 11-17-2006 06:24 AM

...and will it's successor be the 'Nintendo - Number 2' or the 'Poo'?

red-beard 11-17-2006 06:33 AM

I would camp out for somethings, but a game system wouldn't be one of them.

scottmandue 11-17-2006 06:42 AM

I guess electronic gaming has become the "home computer" of this decade. I doubt I will ever have one... too much reality out there for me to enjoy. I suppose the media has done a bad job of brainwashing me into believing I need every electronic gadget under the sun. ;)

Why is Wii a why, why not a wee?

Somebody needs to explain that as all I heve heard it refered to as is the wee.
That just takes all the fun out of it.

LakeCleElum 11-17-2006 06:47 AM

I wouldn't camp out for anything. Not when you can just walk in after Christmas and buy it off the shelf or order off the internet. It's all about instant gratification. I come from a background that was taught to wait for what you want and you'll appreciate it more....Like a 911 for instance...

THAT'S JUST CRAZY TALK!

Wait for a Wii? Just ask Cartman.

Indeed. South Park is the reliable source on which I am basing my information for the correct pronouciation of 'Wii'

I have some more questions though,

Does this mean that I will have to wait until Sunday for a Wii?

Will I have to wait in line for a Wii?

What if I need a wee but already have a place in the line? Will someone hold it for me?

Will I be able to take my Wii home in a carrier bag?

What if this doesn't translate well between American English and English English?

How much more ridiculous does this have to get?

Has Friday arrived un-noticed?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Big Ed 11-17-2006 07:31 AM

Yes I would. Soon as she's of legal age....

And all that cash is a nice bonus, too.

Purrybonker 11-17-2006 07:37 AM

I will buy Wii. But not wait in line for it. Nintendo is my gamebox of choice and I will keep buying new iterations.

Hey - Nintendo is targetting women as part of their marketing strategy to attack that 60% of households that don't own systems. Might be worthwhile to be close to that.

Otherwise the best gaming is PC based anyway. BF2 with FH mod rules.

widebody911 11-17-2006 07:47 AM

I had heard it pronounced "why" but as noted before, I'm notoriously un-hip and not-with-it.

From what I have seen this system uses hand held controllers that you move in space to play the games, rather than a joystick.

Are they coming out with 'Virtual Ironing'? :D

Aerkuld 11-17-2006 07:56 AM

According to this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii

it's 'We'.

That isn't to say it isn't any good, that's how you pronounce it.

That leaves the door wide open...

(At least Jim knows what's going on)

red-beard 11-17-2006 08:07 AM

No. Asolutely not. I am not allowed to wait in line for something like this, I have an IQ over 100. ;)

Sorry about my previous comment...
How long do you expect it will be before you can just go into a store for a Wii?
Which store will you use?

At a Dodger game I once waited in line for a wee...

People in line have been mugged and shot. Others have sold their place in line for thousands of dollars. And who knows how high they'll go on Ebay between now and Xmas.

It was reported that 500,000 will make it to the States before Dec. 25th, but that might be revised to 150,000.

That should guarantee some violence in the malls...:D

red-beard 11-17-2006 10:36 AM

150,000 vs 500,000 before Chirstmas should be the deciding factor between bonus or firing. That would an awful lot of profit not produced in a quarter

red-beard 11-17-2006 10:41 AM

Oh, and did you read about John Edwards? Appearently, he made some comment about needing to get one for his kids. So a young staffer calls up the local Walmart and says they Sen Edwards would like to have one put aside for him.

Walmart has been a target by Edwards, so this has become a talked about incident. When found, Edwards now says that he never asked anyone to get one for him. More likely the young staffer was arranging for one for himself...

dd74 11-17-2006 11:22 AM

The more I see Edwards, the more I dislike him. He's his own hypocrisy; fighting for middle-class wage rights when he's a millionaire many times over via family money is just the starting point. He and Hillary should run.

Somewhere in L.A., Jason Alexander - known for "Seinfeld," was also in line, though I'm sure some star-struck clerk will put one aside for him too.

More interesting, though, is Sony. You'd think they would anticipate such widespread interest in PS3, and hope to avoid a public debacle; even a smear campaign. A couple renown economists (can't believe a stupid video game console reached all the way to that level), have already said Sony should take some responsibility in this, and produce an even larger amount of PS3s to avoid the pending public panic.

pending public panic? LOL!

What's next... the terrorist will hijack truckloads of PS3's and then put out a video of them smashing the things with hammers?

Does anyone know if there will be a Wii shoprtage? If it is made more available it will be interesting to see if Wii can dilute PS3's market share.

Maybe the PS3 has sufficient technology to be Wii proof?

Despite the seeming popularity of the PS3, I guess there are a lot of people looking forward to seeing Wii released on Sunday. I’m looking forward to the public’s reaction to finding Wii on the shelves in local stores.

Aerkuld 11-17-2006 01:03 PM

I've beeing looking at Wii a bit more closely this afternoon. I think Wii might dramatically change the gaming experience.

The new game contollers seem to be the most impressive feature of Nintendo’s new system and provide a more interactive experience. Maybe the kids that have been lazily sitting in front of the TV will now experience at least some exercise as they will be able to Wii standing up and even moving around the room!

Gaming could expand to other generations on this new system. With the movement involved, it could become a lot more of a social activity. It will actually be quite funny to watch people Wii after drinking a few beers, for example. I’d imagine that the more they drink the more people will want to Wii. This could catch on – especially the older folk.

It also looks as though it will be portable so you could pretty much Wii anywhere. A lot of younger gamers with these Import Tuner cars like to have games systems installed in their vehicles. It looks highly likely that it will be possible to Wii in the car. This could prove to be very useful on long road trips, especially with young children.

turbo6bar 11-17-2006 01:44 PM

Nintendo plans to have 4 million units here before Christmas and if demand persists up to 7 million units by next spring. PS3 is a loss leader, so lower units is better, to some extent. However, the Wii is supposedly a profit maker, so more units = more fish and rice for the Japanese workers.

Aerkuld 11-17-2006 04:26 PM

I hope Nintendo don't flood the market with Wii.

I wish I could make a profit from Wii, judging by some of the kids reactions on the TV, quite a lot will be wanting a Wii for Christmas.

As long as they don't steal truck loads of Wii, that would really be taking the p!ss.

Yes, I agree - I'm pretty interested in this shift in the traditional gaming platform. But my kids think the concept is ridiculous...

Yes - I read an interview with some exec in charge of Nintendo marketing in North America. He discussed Nintendo opting to not duke it out with the big boys (eg Sony) and instead try to make a play for that huge "niche" (some niche) that doesn't even own a system - including women. Apparently they have made huge strides with Brain games on DS. I can vouch for those. In terms of the main gaming platforms, I've always been more of a fan of Nintendo adventure/Role Playing Game model more than the bang-bang, race-race of the other guys. Can't beat Ocarina of Time for hours of entertainment.

Aerkuld 11-18-2006 08:17 AM

I am a bit suprised to find that Wii is sold in cardboard boxes. I wouldn't think cardboard and Wii was a good synergy.
OK cardboard is cheap, but I would have thought there was more suitable packaging material.

What will be the best games with Wii? Anyone think of any?

Us "drivers" tend to enjoy reality (I think) more than the altered reality of video games. Although I will admit that they are *very* adicting. I think if I had a game console, I probably wouldn't have written any of my books...

That being the case, I'm glad that Wayne doesn't have a game console. Thanks Wayne! SmileWavy

Personally I enjoy working on, or driving my car much more than playing games. But everyone has different priorities.

I would think Wii will float a lot of boats though.

Since Wii's are available now that the Christmas rush is over, a buddy just bought one. Yesterday I tried bowling, baseball, tennis, and monkey ball. It was a blast and actually a bit of a workout for the sport games. I don't know if I can wait 6 months to get one for my son's birthday. Maybe I could give the wife one for Valentine's day :) Oh hell, I may just have to buy one because it's Saturday!
