Got one (Warning: dead deer photo)

Just arrived after an amazing week of deer hunting with my father in the UP of Michigan (outside Crystal Falls). Good weather, good times.

Shot a good size 4 point. I would say its a spike, but the DNR counted the tiny splays on the ends as points.

3 does and the buck came into a shooting lane. They were over my shoulder, and I had to swing the gun way around. I moved very slowly, but the does spooked. They made one hop, then just stared at me. The buck stared and I didn't move a muscle. 4 hours later (probably like 3 seconds in reality), buck decides I am not a threat, and puts his head down to feed on something. I rapidly swing around and line up, does scatter, buck sticks his head up to check out the commotion........bang. I shot him head on, dead center in the chest, he went down instantly. I was in a blind that is hard to get out of, and I wanted to finish him quickly, so I shot again to finish him off. Stupid. Not needed, and I knicked his stomach. Not terrible, but I had to do some cutting and cleaning to make sure nothing go in the body cavity.

This was 2:45pm, and odd time to get a deer, so there was no one in our camp and the time, and I did not have a vehicle. I was about 1/4 of a mile from the nearest drivable road, so I gutted him, and dragged him to the road. Dragging a 150+ pound animal through the forest, by yourself, no sled.......yeah, no fun.

Me and dad. I know you dig my flourecent/camo jump suit :)

Nice looking. What did you shoot with? Hope you have a large freezer!

Joe

PS the color may be awful but it also keeps you alive...

My wife was near West Branch and didn't see anything but does.(No doe permit.)
She came hom early as there just wasn't any bucks around the property.

Didn't see a thing southwest of Baldwin, MI, either.

An old Winchester model 100 (autoloader) in .308, with an old weaver scope. Absolute piece of crap. I was borrowing it from my dad who had assured me it was decent. Yeah right....

Grand parents lived in Muskegon, so we hunted in and around Baldwin quiet a bit. Used to hunt in a recreation area called Pines Point. It was never very productive.

Great fly fishing though....

Judging by the results, I'd say your dad was right!

Your dad sure looks proud of you!

Good shooting there! My father and son both went deer hunting last weekend and only saw fawns and small doe, so they didn't shoot. They'll go hunting again next weekend and hopefully get a deer like the one you got!

vash 11-20-2006 11:48 AM

hey, i have one of those original weaver scopes! it is like peeking thru a cloud.

Good kill HardDrive!

Here in Tejas the draught about killed all the fawns then the rains came in and made plenty of grass. The Oaks were stressed so they made a bumper crop of acorns. That means the deer are very fat. Most feeders have been untouched and some have 6 inches of corn growing around them.

Texas doesn't have the size deer the midwest has but were are filthy wth fat ones this year.
