Ghost tracks
Post up
tracks that have gone away This one is located very close to me but I have never been there, yet. Saved as a forrest preserve/park. http://www.meadowdaleraceway.homestead.com/ A coworker raced late model cars here into the 80's http://santafespeedwaymemories.homestead.com/ The track was sold to housing developers ![]() Last edited by 5axis; 11-23-2006 at 04:50 PM.. |

There are portions of the 'old' Road America that are now county roads. Of course, RA is still alive and well... It's fun driving the roads near there that so many take for granted knowing that at one time, the racing greats were pounding down that pavement.

Here’s a thread from another forum on abandoned racetracks. It’s a great read if you have some time (250+ replies).
http://forums.thecarlounge.net/zerothread?id=2854313&page=1 It’s sad to see how many racetracks have gone away due to owners selling the land for housing developments.

MAR, Mid American Raceway in Wentzville Missouri. This track was just West of St. Louis and a very nice track in its day.
I spend many a weekend at MAR and raced open wheel and production there for almost 10 years back in the 1970's. This is where Dorsey Schroeder of Speed fame got his start. _________________ Mid America Raceways Mid America Raceways was a 1200' dragstrip located near Wentzville, Missouri. The facility also featured a 2.89 mile course which passed out of service quite some time before the dragstrip shut down. The road course was highly regarded, with varying elevation changes, a very long straight, and ten corners, 7 right and 3 left turns. There were 11 flag stations, #11 being on the straight after the driveover bridge near the end of the dragstrip. The dragstrip also had its run-off area downhill, so there was a strong need for good brakes. This facility was torn down at the end of 2005, apparently sold for development. ![]() ![]()

This ghost track is close to my heart, Crystal Palace race track on the site of Crystal Palace park.
![]() This track was in use up untill 1973, both my parents spectated there and more recently a small section of the track was re opened for once yearly sprint events, staged betwean 1997 and 2000. No chance now of returning it to being a race circuit, its deep in the heart of a large residential area in South London and parts of the old circuit have been narrowed to become cycle paths. If you look at the aerial photo below you can still see the basic track outline. http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.cgi?client=public&X=534500&Y=171000&scale=10000&width=700&height=400&gride=&gridn=&lang=&db=freegaz&coordsys=gb |
