Targeted Marketing -- Missed by a Mile!

I got a jewelry company catalog in the mail yesterday with Rolex watches being the highlight of their offerings.

Yea, like I would ever spend $35,000 on a watch!

I don't know who they bought my name from, or what purchase I could have made that would put me on the list as a possible purchaser of such items, but do know that this "targeted marketing" attempt missed by a mile!

It actually got me thinking that I had better check my credit reports to see if someone has swiped my identity -- it just doesn't fit in with my usual targeted mailings. Maybe Northern Tool or Cabela's sold my name to this jewelry retailer?

I've noticed I've gotten a lot of these things since I bought my first Porsche 3 years ago. I know in Illinois, the DMV sells your name to marketers--and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

When I was a college student and computer science major, I used to get IBM's catalog, listing $35,000 computers. I don't know how they figured out I was rich beyond my wildest imagination.

Apparently I am considered well off since I bought my $20k Carrera. I frequently get flashy ad material and catalogs. Not least from car dealers, like Ferrari.

Maybe they just missed a zero. I did not by a Porsche for $200k.

My first year of college, I didn't own a car, just a bicycle, lived in the dorms. One day I got a thing in my mailbox that said that I had a package. When I picked the package up it was a poster tube from Porsche NA. It was a poster of a turbo with an invitation to setup a test drive. I thought that was pretty darn funny. I wish I had the poster still.
