Anyone own 2nd property in Hi?
Looks like the money gods might be shining my way...wife wants a second place w/ golf, tennis, beach. Who am I to argue:D Since we already live at the bottom of Cali, the only mo betta place would be Hawaii. She doesn't like Mex or Central Am...if I had my choice I'd be in Costa Rica...so I'm kinda stuck. Ideas or suggestions where to look? I can go either way...Kuaui or Maui or Oahu...laid back or touristy. We'd rent it out I'm sure, no sense leaving an asset like that to lie fallow.

Right you are...justa cursory look shows studio's on the beach in Maui @ low 7 figures. Apparently, owning just across the street from the beach the cost drops dramatically...but it doesn't rent nearly as many days/year as the same thing ON the beach. These parcels have experienced the same hyper inflation of price as many other desireable locations. Dont know if that means they are as suseptible to market gyrations. 1st order of business will be to pay off the primary place of residence.

Time share. But beware: their prices are increasing weekly. Last year or two years ago was the time to get into them on Kauai. Not so much now, I'm afraid...

Friend of mine has a second home in Koloa on Kauai. Its waayyyy up on the mountain, no property to speak of, can't even see the beach, two bedrooms with a loft for kids to sleep in. Just a bungalow really. 5 years ago it cost $400K. And the cost of living is really, really high.

I'd rather rent a condo on the beach than own a house a mile from the water. I'll never have enough $$$ to live in Hawaii.
