Anyone have a Tonsillectomy as an adult?

Due to some worsining breathing issues, my Doc wants to have my Tonsills and Uvula removed. From what I read, it is pretty bad when you are my age - mid 30s. Any experiences?

I had my tonsils removed for allergy reasons, but not the uvula. No biggie at all.

How were they affecting your allergys? Also, how old were you when it was done? How long were you down? Thanks

Cornpanzer,
I had it done 5 years ago - both the Tonsills and Uvula. I won't lie to you, it sucked for about 2 weeks. The first week I didn't eat much at all and the second week it got a little better. I feels like a really bad sore throat for a few weeks. I would strongly reccomend it to any one who gets cronic sore throats and also anybody who snores bad. I used to snore so bad my wife slept in another room and that was after she would repeatedly kick me in the ribs to wake up. After the Uvulectomy she used to wake me to see if I ws still alive - I slept so quite she thought I was dead!

I suffered from sleep apnea (sp) now I don't. I haven't had a sore throat in 5 years either.

That pretty well sums it up. While all surgery has risks; and your surgeon will explain those to you, as well as your anesthesiologist, this is very straight forward surgery, performed thousands of times a year in the US for just the reasons Lubemaster stated.

I had a tonsillectomy done about 10 years ago along with some sinus surgery. (and a vasectomy at the same time, great story!).

No great shakes, throat was a little sore, but no biggie. He used a laser which I think helped speed the recovery.

I had it done about age 20 and it was a ***** the first couple of days.

I still have problems with it as the doctor pulled my jaw open too far and damaged one socked. It still makes clicking sounds when I open it.

Otherwise it was well worth it and would do it again, but with a better doctor.

I have sleep apnea and asked for the surgery but my doc prescribed a C-Pap machine instead. Works great but I'd still rather have my tonsils and uvula out.

I had mine out at age 25 I think - bad for 10 days - liquids, then soups, but it's really no big deal.

I was about 30 years old and was always stuffed up and sneezing. It started shortly after I had my spleen removed, so it may have had something to do with my immune system. It was suggested to have my tonsils checked, and the ENT doctor said they can either be helping you or hurting you. It helped a little afterwards, but I later discovered other, more effective things. I was only mildly down for a few days, as I recall. This was the mid-80's. The ENT, she drove a Quattroporte.

Okay, wuss.

Seriously, take 10 days off work (you HAVE to). After 10 days of rest, you're almost back to normal. You'll have 2 large "holes" in the back of your throat which will remain for about 3 months where food will get stuck, but the "holes" will heal over.

Erwin, Don't scaring him now - thats just not true.

Just get it done, the pain goes but the sleep issues won't if you don't get it down. Cowboy up!
