Shares in both companies rising today on rumours that Porsche wants to take over VW. What I cannot understand is why Porsche would want to do this. VW has the highest cost structure of all the major auto assemblers, Germany has the highest wages in Europe, VW's major shareholder (Lower Saxony) sees VW as a social welfare agency for the state, VW faces a hostile union (IG Metal), and previous VW management wasted enormous amounts of money on unprofitable ventures. Audi maybe, but not VW.
The only explanation I can come up with is family ties ... ![]()

Retro Karmann Ghia (fill in for a long in the tooth retro beetle??), test bed for new products, Audi, broader market penetration; what's not to like?

Porsche already holds controlling interest in VW. They have started firing upper management.
It isn't good for the enonomy of Stutgart, for VW to go under. Do a search on this forum, this has arleady been brought up. I personally would love to see VW go down the tiolet. These cars give me more trouble than any other brand I work on.

Porsche wants access to VWAG's larger manufacturing infrastructure, so that they can continue to expand their model line. The Panamera was/is supposed to me a joint venture like the Cayenne, with VW and Porsche sharing a chassis (the next-gen A8/Phaeton). VW management recently nixed that, saying they want to stick with the current aluminum chassis while Porsche wants to go with steel. Porsche couldn't change their minds, so now they'll change their managers.
There also seems to be some interest in getting Wendelin Weideking to take over VWAG to effect the turn-around he's performed on Porsche, and the board is trying to keep him happy. Interfering with his Porsche plans runs counter to that.
