I used to think this was a huge deal as well, but go back to the results of some of the races 20+ years ago. Only 2-3 cars would finish on the lead lap and a lot of the "also rans" were 5+ laps behind.
1/2 the field would finish the race as well, so I think F1 has come a long way. Cars are more dependable and a lot of different drivers / cars won.
