memory foam, good or bad?
 

i'm looking for a new mattress and wondering about the ones made out of that stuff or even the kind that incorporates a thin layer of that on top of a mattress.

i generally prefer a firm surface and not sure how that 'sinking' into it is going to affect it.

anyone has any experience with them? good/bad/no difference?

We switched to this a year or so ago and love it. The company is called Tempurpedic. I can highly recommend it. We sleep better and wake up feeling fitter.

With memory foam, it'll be tricky to get one girl out and another one in. The second, third or fourth will know another one was there! :D

I've always liked a firm bed. A few years ago, we bought a pillow top mattress. It was very padded and you sank into it. I hated that damn mattress and my back use to hurt every morning, because my torsal was always lower than the lower half of my body. The cushiness or give in the mattress would allow my heavier torsal to sink lower into the mattress than my legs and hips. Imagine sleeping on an incline with your feet higher than your head. Also, it allowed my spine to curve at the lower back...I prefer a more flat surface for my spin to flatten out. (I'm a back sleeper ( I sleep on my back)....not a side sleeper. A side sleep would probably like the pillow top or foam better)

I would imagine the memory foam bed will allow some of the above. If you like a firm bed, the foam may be a bad choice. (shrug)

Go talk to the cutie at the mattress shop and seee if you can spend a night in the store to test the mattress out. If she's afraid you'll wreck the store at night, just have her come keep you company ;)

There are a lot of companies around now doing memory foam. I believe Tempurpedic is the oldest and best of these - but what do I know. Try them out. See how they feel.

You can also get a 3 or 4 inch memory foam overlay for your existing mattress. This is a very cheap solution that seems to work well for friends of ours.

We have a tempurpedic and like it a lot. We tried the thinner overlay, and it didn't work well for us. Some of the criticisms of the tempurpedics that I've heard are that they take some "breaking in," if you like your bedroom cold (<65F) they are too hard, and initially they may give off an odor that is temporary but some don't like. We had none of these problems. The cheaper knock offs are not nearly as good.

Another option is the "comfort select" (not memory foam) but an air pump system, which my son has and loves.

Both are expensive, but a good night's sleep is priceless. I recommend looking at both, getting on them and seeing how they feel for you and yours.

I bought some of that memory foam stuff but I got jipped. Seems the foam I bought had CRS ;)

We have the 2" Tempurpedic pad. I love it.

We got our tempurpedic bed 4 years ago. I also use the contoured pillow. It's the best bed / pillow combo I've ever used. I have not awakened with a stiff neck, lower back pain or knee pain on this combo. What's weird is that the first couple of nights were terrible. I thought I had made a big mi$take.

We have a memory foam "topper" that we added to the standard mattress (Sealy) and I absolutely LOVE it. Great on my back and keeps the movement down if your bedmate is a restless sleeper. I'm sold on them.

We got a foam mattress a while ago. I loved it right away. It took the wife a little longer to like it. The foam mattress took away all my shoulder pain that I used to have every morning. The only downside to them is they run a little hotter.

I was looking at foam matresses (memory) on Overstock the other night, the generic company sold a foam bed with 4 lb foam, the tempurpedic was 5 lb foam. Don't know the difference in quality, lasting, comfort, etc, but the difference in price was about $1K!
