Eric R. Pianka, another whacked out "doktor" wants to exterminate 90% of humanity.
One of Pianka's earliest points was a condemnation of anthropocentrism, or the idea that humankind occupies a privileged position in the Universe. He told a story about how a neighbor asked him what good the lizards are that he studies. He answered, “What good are you?”
Pianka hammered his point home by exclaiming, “We're no better than bacteria!” Pianka then began laying out his concerns about how human overpopulation is ruining the Earth. He presented a doomsday scenario in which he claimed that the sharp increase in human population since the beginning of the industrial age is devastating the planet. He warned that quick steps must be taken to restore the planet before it's too late. ________________________________________ He more or less IMO advocates the extermination of 90% of humanity via airborne Ebola virus. Here is a link to some of what this guy had to say. http://www.pearceyreport.com/archives/2006/04/transcript_dr_d.php He references some boos like "the end of oil" and others that I view as politically biased "fear books" QUESTIONER: People who are educated seem to have fewer children. PIANKA: Right. Right. Definitely, smarter people have fewer kids. I think [unintelligible] pointed this out. He said those who don’t have any conscience about the Earth are going to inherit the Earth, because those who cared made fewer babies and those who didn’t care made more babies. And so we’re [going to evolve . . .] uncaring. And I think that’s probably happening. I think IQs are falling for the same reason, too. ___________________________________ People who care about the earth have fewer babies??? I don’t think so, in fact I posted that very question here on PPOT and no one came up with that answer. |

I'm of the opinion that posting things like this just serves to give this whack job more publicity.

I remember a James Bond film with a plot like this. Good thing "Jaws" saved the day!

Isn't this essentially position that Green Peace and PETA have?
... My little sister lives in Andersonville, Chicago. Many of her friends are vegan environazis. You can't reason with these people. They live in their own little self-created bubble.

frankly i agree with the dude that we are to arrogant and selfcentered , that we have evolved our way or life in a very unnatural way , and a large percentage of the population wouldn't know where to look if all supermarkets and fast food joints, and electricity would suddently be taken away...
so yeah, this guy has a point from nature's standpoint , it wouldn't hurt to reduce our numbers with 90%... realistically we would benefit from it as well as a species, but obviously nobody will want to be the one in that 90%, cause selfcentered as we are, our ego will always feel that we ourselves are that much better then the rest.. we all feel we are worth to be in the 10% so i don't think we'll ever get it right, and nature will eventually do it for us... be that through a naturally perfected Ebola strain, or Superflue , or simply by some major natural disaster that affects the whole planet

natural means , not exhausting resources, not destroying the places where other species live...let alone , where we ourselves live sustainable use of what there is, and every species has it's own natural enemies, and things keep eachother in check ... sure you could say that our population growth the last 50-100 years is natural, just like you could say it would be natural for nature to snuff us all to set us straight... it is very natural , that we as are practically the only species that has nothing to fear from other species, and have the luxury of focussing on killing eachother...if we are not to busy watching TV that is.. and yes, let's draw the natural line that continues , in 20 years, 7 billion? 30 years 8 ? 40 10 billion? where will it end? how long before we , naturally , start having problems that we cannot ignore or fix... ultimately, nature IS going to survive mankind , even if we ourselves have a full blown nuclear exchange, with a nuclear winter that lasts 20 years... even then , life, nature, will persist probably won't be in the form of mammals, but "something" would survive

There's a direct corrolation between population, environment and standard of living.
Sure, 300 years into the future we could all live in 10x10foot boxes, have little personal goods, and eat fortified microorganism cakes, but why? There will come a time when a natural/man made disaster will make this happen, but not before many, if not most, other species have dissapeared as well. Facilitating large families and population movements only speeds up the process. A temporary answer is higher 2nd-child taxation, forced sterilization of baby-machine mothers, and controlled immigration.... but then that goes against the trained instinct of most because an expanding population is always stronger than it's neighbors. [/rant]

Species consumed all of the resources they needed to survive and died out long before humans existed. This "balance" you speak of is a temporary thing, at best.

but just like balance is temporary so is rising figures of anything at some point it has to peak and then it has to come down same goes for our population numbers it has to peak, we just don't know when and once it peaks, it'll go down, because it has to , it is only natural, we won't do it on our own, so something else will do it for us, natural disaster, war, famine, virii, something...
