Where Was The Safety Inspector???

Obviously, the person responsible for the safety during this filming was asleep at the wheel. This guy could have been hurt really badly!

Semper fi, Hugh!

Acutally a stunt man was hurt pretty bad during that unrolling scene. The only on camera-type serious accident I might add, and it happened during a rehearsal. He got unrolling very fast and his legs spread apart from centrifugal forces and ripped the tendons behind his package rather badly. We took him to the hospital and after an MRI, they discovered he'd nicked his Femoral artery. Several months later he was back at work. When we did the scene later we had a simple solution, we tied his ankles together so his legs couldn't spread apart (different stuntman). If you look real closely, you'll see his legs are together, and then there not at the end of the unroll, a little digital magic. I'm out of the office for the next few days, I'll try and post some on how we did that gag when I get back.

Unfortunately, my name doesn't appear on credits ever, a sore point. The reason is that I work for Disney Corporate, not the production company itself. The production is a corporation called "Second Mate Productions" we technically "buy" the finished product from that corporation. We can't have Disney employees names on the credits for something we supposedly don't own. Its the same issue with my colleagues at the other studios. Sometimes you'll see titles like "Stunt Safety" or Dive Safety Officer", but they are members of the shooting crew.

Wow, Hugh! That's quite a story! Hopefully you realize I was only funnin' when I posted this. I hope the injured stuntman recovered quickly and completely.

That's quite a dangerous job and I'm sure you do quite the job in making sure these guys stay as safe as their trade allows.

Randy

That sequence was something. That flip scene must have been done with the pole digitized in later and then the whole scene shot with the cliff in the background?

Hugh, I just saw a promo of a river boat exploding during a trailer for a new film. Didn't you do that?

Tied his legs together during the "spin" scene....

Knew that there was a reason why I was not a stuntman...

Believe that I will keep my current job!

Yeah, Deja Vu with Denzel Washington, we shot it in New Orleans after Katrina. I'll see if I can find a link to a previous post.

From Lube

"That sequence was something. That flip scene must have been done with the pole digitized in later and then the whole scene shot with the cliff in the background? "

The whole scene except for Johnny Depp and the stuntman doing the unroll was done digital and infront of a blue screen that is, the pole jump across the gorge and the pole bouncing down the gorge were digital.

M21, I'm not a stunt man, far from it. What I do is motion picture and television safety, but I do work closely with Stunts and Special Effects. Here's a pic of how we did the unroll in that sequence.

Watching the scene and then seeing the production photo is a vivid reminder of the time, talent, and resources that go into 4 seconds worth of screen time.

If you look to the center and bottom of the 1st pic you can see suspended from one crane one the "bone cages" the cannibals held the pirates in. We swung that infront of the blue screen with the actors in it to film their swinging, and vine climbing escape.
