12/6 last CC payment, ever!

December 6th 2006 will be a day I remember for a long time.

Many moons ago, my now Ex wife started financing her business through credit cards in my name, and hid it very well. As things fell apart, we paid off what we could, but in the end, I was still stuck with a small fortune (5 figures) in credit card debt.

Today, I wrote the last check to pay off the last card. Just like getting a big raise at work. It will be wonderful to be able to put something away now.......

I take it ex-wives suck. I hope I never have one.

Congrats on getting clear, John.

Wow....

I'm sure the divorce courts would have saddled you with all of the debt had the tables been turned.

Sweet! Congrats. We are working on our debt. We've gotten rid of a huge chunk of it, and if I start a new job in Jan like I believe I will then we'll be able to accelerate the pay off. Just being rid of the majority of it now is a good thing. We have gone from 11 CC total down to 1 each. One that is on a low balance transfer and one that is used for daily stuff but gets paid off like a debit card.

Wow, congrats.

I can't imagine what it'd be like to find out that you were "secretly" building up that debt. I bet you'd have an interesting perpective on the "how do I hide my 911 costs from wifey" thread.

It's going to take us two months to pay off December purchases, but we'll be at $0 by the end of January...

+1. No CC debt. I (or the wife) haven't even used a credit card since we've been married.

I can't imagine having that sword above your head... Congrats I bet it's a great feeling, sure sorry about the way it happened though. I never went into any significant debt untill we bought our house. It was really hard as I have never been able to get used to owing someone.

A couple of months after my divorce settlement a few CC bills showed up. They were subtracted from her share of the real estate auction (which I won). First marriages are just for practice, did much better with the second. Debt free for 10 years.

Congrats.

Now burn them.

Those credit card companies are a ripoff. I refuse to use them except for business travel. I won't give them a red cent. I use debit only.

Though, my mom has Discover she faithfully pays off every month, and she gets money back at the end of the cycle (sometimes 100 dollars or more). She charges everything, and pays it off each month. She's never paid a dime of interest. But that takes willpower which many don't have...

You have a wise mom. By all means, use credit cards...but only use them when you already have the cash waiting to pay the bill. Cindy & I have never paid a dime in credit card interest....

My wife and I have a shared Visa that we put EVERYTHING on, and pay off every month. Makes budgeting a lot easier, because we can check in at any point and see if we're above/below our monthly "budget". Side benefit is that after 2 years, we have enough points to fly anywhere in North America.
