Ford V10 - Excursion
Been looking at bigger trucks for hauling the car around a couple times a year. I want a truck, wife wants an suv, so I've been looking at the used excursions. I've seen a few with the v10. Anyone have experience with them? I know it will be a gas sucker, but I'm looking at towing a box trailer 6-8 times a year.

With a truck that big.... get a diesel.
My F250 w/6.0 PSD gets 21 mpg highway, and about 14-15 towing a 26' box trailer. I cant imagine the mileage I would get towing my trailer with gas power |
I'm trying to get a diesel, but haven't found a diesel excursion. Quite a few f250's though.

The fuel bill w/ a V-10 in that vehicle is insane, but it also makes them almost worthless on the used market so you get thousands of dollars towards gas when you pick the V-10 over the diesel. The other part of the equation is that the diesel is just a lot better engine for towing, more bottom-end torque and runs cooler, etc..
Avoid the early ('03-'04) 6.0 diesels at all costs. Get the 7.3 that proceeded it or an '05 6.0. All of the diesels have a 100k powertrain warrantee unless they have been chipped. If you buy one under 100k, ascertain at a Ford dealer that the warrantee is valid before buying, it makes a large 4-figure difference in the value of the truck. I'm selling my F-250 4x4 w/ a fresh 7.3 Powerstroke, if you are interested shoot me a PM. I want $11.5k for it. |
Friend has a Diesel Excursion and loves the thing..
The reason U find the V-10s is they are too expensive to run...conversely the Diesels are being kept, because of they offer decent mileage for all the power you get in return. |
Ohh yeah down the Freeway the diesels book..
|
^^^^^^Why avoid the 6.0 diesel? My dad has one in his F350, and has clocked 60k trouble free miles in just 3 years.
|
I think that's what BrianKiethSmith uses to haul his 930 race car around with. I'm sure it drinks the gas...

Shame you're all the way in LA and I'm in NC, I'd take a look at that truck. |

I have an 06 F-250 with the V-10 and previously had a 99 PSD. With 2800 miles on the V-10, I would have to say that it certainly has more pick-up than the diesel. I haven't towed anything yet with the V-10, but it is pretty torquey--not as much as the diesel, but with the posi rear, it is better than the non-posi diesel in mud and gravel(less need to put it into 4WD).
I have been averaging around 12--15MPG--the only mods are a K&N filter, and a Flowmaster/Gibson hybrid cat-back dual exhaust(I liked the Gibson pipes and tips--hated the sound of the muffler, so I ditched the muffler and welded in a flowmaster 50, and kept the other Gibson components. I haven't been easy on the gas pedal though. So, far, I definately like the V-10 better than the diesel, and we are going to purchase a few more for our fleet--currently 99% of our trucks are PSD. fixed the MPG! and added this link: great resource for Ford excursion/trucks:http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php |
Eric, if you have been "averaging 15-18mpg" w/ a V-10 4x4 you should call the Guinness book of records. That's amazing.
