casette tape direction

Does anyone know the direction casette tapes run in normal (vs. auto reverse) mode? Does it run from the left to right or right to left?

Thanks,
Skip

This is from my feeble memory, but I'll say the pickup side is on the right. So left to right.

From time to time I still play tapes on my old single well Nakamichi deck. Starting with a wound tape, the empty wheel goes on the right.
