Somewhat related, Toyota makes a hybrid minivan that gets 40MPG that it sells in Japan and other countries. They had planned on bringing into the US but have since changed their plans. Can you imagine what something like that would do to the big three? I think the US put a stop to it. |

I buy a lot of diesel, so I watch the price pretty close. On Dec. 1st it when up 20 cents at several stations I saw overnight, and has crept up another 15 cents since then. I paid 3.25 per gallon today.

3 or 4 months ago diesel was 30 cents cheaper than regular. Now it is 40 cents more. My pick-up has been sitting in the driveway alot....

Wait, try that again, you drove 2000km + 2x600km + 76x18km on a single tank of diesel? That is 4568km on a single tank, or ~3000miles. You should go post on TDIClub and see what they say about that. As for the purpose of ULSD... IT IS NOT FOR CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. All modern diesels have catalytic converters, they work just fine with plain old low sulphur diesel. The purpose of ULSD is to support diesel particulate filters (DPF's) and urea injection systems. Rumors have it that ULSD offers less lubricity than LSD did, and that it can lead to premature injection pump failure, but recent testing data is showing exactly the opposite result. We'll see how it pans out. |

As soon as I start the car, I switch to vegetable oil. I only use diesel on the last 5kms of any drive, to purge vegetable oil out of the fuel system. All the rest of my driving is on vegetable oil. 5km purge means 1/3 of my daily commute is diesel, but on longer drives it's really significant. When I went to Ottawa in July, I only drove 20kms on diesel. Quote:

Okay, so you weren't wrong, just misleading ;)
Saying 1 tank of diesel lasted you almost 5000km is not fair, considering that you were running almost exclusively on vegitable oil during that 5000km. Saying 1 tank of diesel and 10 tanks of oil on the other hand..... :D |
All I can say is that I've been watching diesel spike in my area. Filled my F350 up yesterday for the paultry sum of $107.58. And that was while I was looking at the sign showing 92 octane gas at 50 cents a gallon cheaper. Needless to say I was (and still am) pissed.
