Doesn't anyone say "Thank you" anymore?
 

When you go out of your way to help someone you never met, is it expecting too much for them to email or PM you a "Thank you"? Am I old fashioned or out of step with social norms?

Examples:
- Sent/gave someone a factory turbo manual.
- Some guy needed a hard to get connector for his project in a hurry and vendor he tried was out of stock. Spent $26 to overnight him one.
- Some guy needed dimension drawing in order to create 915 transmission tools so I dug through my stuff and emailed them off.

I try to tell myself "Hey, maybe they were raised by wolves, they don't know any better." but these were all Pelican's - some of the nicest people on the net. This make me question if I'm the one who's out of step.

EDIT: It turns out the recipient of the Turbo manual did send me a Thank-you but it got lost in the email.

I needed a couple of switches for the wife's car. I contacted Lem's and the gent I dealt with realized that the switches would be useless without the special bracket that was soniclly "welded" to tje door panel. He not only supplied the switches, but cut enough of the panel to include the bracket. I not only thanked him, I sent him a picture of the finished project and sent a letter to the mgt describing how he went out of the way to help.

I have helped people who have not been responsive. As they turn to leave, I loudly say: "You're Welcome!" It gets their attention!!

Those are the kinds of things that should be profusely thanked.

That would be the genteel thing to do and we all know no one is genteel anymore. That would mean you have an air about you, anyway its much easier to not say thank you, you probably have to say thank you at work all day long and are sick of saying it.

OK, I won't be a smart ass anymore.

I had a guy from the east coast call on my '87 Targa I have for sale. He said he would be in town over the Thanksgiving holiday and would like to come by and take a look at the car.

He came, saw, and drove the car (sorry about the leaks!) and then returned home saying he had another car to look at near where he lived.

He ended up passing on my car because of the shipping cost but he did call and thank me for taking the time to show the car. I in turn thanked him for coming to look at it. Truly a Thanksgiving exchange! Or a Thank-fest. Whatever. The point is that he was nice enough to call back even though he found another car to buy.

Most people don't bother.

If I go look at someones car, I call later and thank them for their time...even if we're passing on the car.

Thanks for sharing that. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I promise to say thanks if you send me a bunch of free stuff ;)

Chris, You should have been thanked by all those guys....especially for spending money to help someone out. I have test driven cars and emailed pictures for out-of-area Pelicans. I've provided (small) parts for free and I have always gotten profuse thanks.

Maybe I've been lucky, but most of the guys here are, well....in a lot of ways like me. Just pursuing their hobby and glad to have other guys available to talk things over with. You can make fun of it but I try to practice "pay-it-forward". For the most part, I believe in "what-goes-around-comes-around."

Hell, Thank YOU for taking all of mom's old sheet music...you can actually read and play it. I had no use for it, but couldn't bring myself to toss it.

that old music is still very much appreciated, paul. one of these days i'm gonna get my recorder setup again and send you some music. :)

Know how you feel - I must have sent out about $5000 worth of oil around the country this past year and got maybe 10% to say thanks. No biggy - maybe the oil *****'d their cars up?

If you had sent me some, I would have thanked you by all my heart and in return sent you my newly published 'manual' for parents on common childhood diseases. In Swedish of course.. ;)
