What is it about labs and farts? Our lab we had to put down two months ago used to lay down the most room clearing bombs you ever smelled. My wife and I would be sitting on the couch with our shirts pulled over our noses and Edie would just look up like, "who me"???
Hopefully Lucy won't be as rank as Edie was, lol. |
Dutch has cleared a room a couple of times.

Man, everyone has chocolate labs...
We thought about getting another purebred chocolate, but after our last one (the one still with us) who has seizures and severe hip dysplasia, I thought maybe a mixed breed would be healthier. I swear, labs have got to be some of the best looking dogs ever. There was a pug puppy in the pound yesterday that looked like it was blind in one eye and had that nasally, I'm almost choking on myself kind of bark that pugs have. I hope that guy gets adopted, he was one ugly dude though... |
Congrats--what a pup! I'll make sure Farmer protects her 'til she can hold her own. Don't talk to me about K9 gas. If you remember, it was last Christmas that Farmer ate 2lbs of Godiva chocolate...her audible ones made all the needles fall right off the Christmas tree after that. Congrats again,

Great looking dogs. But dogs shouldn't chronically fart. Try a premium dry food diet. No canned food, no supermarket stuff like Purina or Pedigree. It's low-grade stuff. Even Iams has turned to crap (purchased by conglomerate). While dogs are scavengers and can really eat anything, wheat and flour (grain byproducts and cereals) -- first ingredients on most dog food -- are not desirable. First ingredient should be actual lamb or chicken (not "meal" or "product"). Rice is okay as second or third ingredient. Innova or Royal Canin or Natural Choice, along those lines. You will pay a little more but dog will look, act and be healthier, probably stop scratching, and won't stink.

Mine does not chronically fart. It just so happened she ripped one the night before the trip and I was worried it would not pass in time for the trip.
She only ripped one in the truck, both the windows went down asap. |
Yeah, that's right...blame it on the dog!

My brother in laws chocolate is around 12 now. Not only does he constantly fart he just smells really bad all the time.
You get within 5 feet of him and you want to puke. They've tried everything, grooming, diet, medication, nothing helps. I have 4 cats and all their litter boxes combined don't even come close to smelling as bad as this dog. I don't know how they live with it. |
I have a personal theory (that and a token will get you on the bus) that chocolate labs are more prone to genetic health issues than yellows or blacks. If you look at coat color inheritance in labs, chocolate is a double recessive. So it is harder to get dogs which will produce chocolates than yellows or blacks. I figure anytime you have to breed to a more difficult target, you will end up collecting several traits common in "overbred" dogs.
Hopefully this pup has a little mix in her, I really don't want another dog with seizures and horrible hips. We'll see... |
Rick,
All the best to your new family addition from Casey, Colby, Jazz, Colleen and Brindle, all of whom are mixed breeds from the local shelter. (Did I mention my wife volunteers there and there are 8 cats in the house too?) Les |

Most responsible lab owners would never, and I mean never, leave their lab tethered in a prong collar.
