Guinness Not Irish?
 

Guinness always has and always will be brewed at St. James Gate in Ireland. They just took an English idea, perfected it and did it better... naturally ;)

If you're looking for "real" Irish Stout, try Beamish. Great stuff.

I have always considered Stout being the more robust, then porter, mild, bitter, and ale, with larger being the lightest.

In my opinion there is a difference between Porter and Stout, the latter being a slightly more robust beer. As a consequence I would have to agree that Guinness IS different from the porter from which its inspiration was drawn, and therefore, that Guinness IS Irish.

I also have to agree that Beamish and Murphy's are pretty tasty stouts too!

And anything online must be true.

Many years ago, I frequented a place called Mconnahey's pub.

They had a very large collection of beers from around the world and offered a little perk, if you drank 12 different beers and got your ticket stamped every time, you got the 13th beer for free and you got a free T-shirt. My brother and a friend and I decided we were going to do it all in one sitting.
I was 21 and that sounded like a good idea at the time. Youth=stupid.
Anywho, I was done with my 11th beer and the last one by no coincidence was guinness.
I tried to gag it down, baely made it into the restroom to barf. That is some nasty stuff.
Haven't been able to look at a guinness since then without gagging. Funny, the same thing happens when i smell tequilla.

I figure about half the people who drink guinness do it because they like it, the other half do it to try and impress someone.

Beamish is very good. The best Guinness is in Dublin. The stuff here is not the same.

I can barely choke down lagers. They taste thin and fowl to me. I went through three years of college thinking I hated beer until I had Sam Adams. Guinness is thick and smooth. To me, the experience is little different than drinking the perfect cup of hot chocolate.

Guinness in Ireland is definitely different than Guinness here. People will argue all day long about which Dublin Pub has the best Guinness, but I didn't have a bad one my whole time there. The funny thing to me, of course, was that people in Ireland were paying shiny coin for Bud Light, because it's an "import." Wow.

(shrug) It's kind of an acquired taste, though -- a lot of guys don't like them, and that's ok. I don't like a lot of other beers. And ultimately, who cares if it's Irish or English, as long as it's good?

Funny, I have always found that quaffing Guinness is fairly easy but trying to do the same with larger is terrible. I think it has something to do with the amount of bubbles - Guinness being relatively flat.
Also in my 'yoof' I don't ever recall having too many problems with 12 pints in a night, but that would have been over about 4 hours I suppose.

Guinness is somewhat of an aquired taste I think. Some people just don't get on with it, but I would say most of those that do drink it do it for the pleasure. Why would it impress anyone?

Incidentally I have the same reaction to tequilla due to - ahem - a bad experience. Lets just say we ran out of salt long before we ran out of tequilla!

Love Guinness... don't care where it is made, back when the San Pedro brewery was John T's they had Guinness and Murphy's and they could hardly give away a Murphy's.

Goose island in Chicago had great beer at the brewery but don't like their stuff in the bottle.

Loved anything made by Harpoon when I was in Boston.

Belmont brewery in Long Beach, Ca. makes a lovely (pilsner?) named Marathon... and they are right on the beach bike path so you can watch the beach bunnies while you quaff beer.
