959 on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-PORSCHE-959-S-US-RACING-BRAND-%20NEW_W0QQitemZ170059034141QQihZ007QQcategoryZ605 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I find the description a little confusing:

Quote:
1989 PORSCHE 959 S US RACING VERSION

One of only ( 29 ) 959 S US Racing version built by Porsche and this is still brand new,

with only delivery Mil.

This may be the only brand new 959 in the World

This is an extremely rare brand new Porsche with only delivery Mil.

Total 959 / and 959 S build by Porsche aprox. 200 ( 959 ) and 29 ( 959 S )

Car Sold Fob : Germany , the 959 is not street legal in the US .

May be imported to the US with exemptions .

That's a lot of money for a car with no cupholders.

1) Don't 959s usually sell in the low $100's?

2) Can you really consider a 17 year-old car "new"?

3)What does "Car Sold Fob" mean?

4) Is the car in the U.S. or Germany?

I think this auction is a good example of how using complete sentences would greatly aid it.

I don't think anyone will bid as it appear to have the volume/quality of text I would associate with a used Atari, not an (allegedly) $400,000 car.

FOB= Freight On Board

Car is in Germany

This a good example of an ebay ad where the seller doesn't expect to sell. He had just enough time to type 'Mil.' but couldn't spare the time to type 'mileage.'

1) Don't 959s usually sell in the low $100's?

I've seen them in the 200k - 300k range, but I don't consider myself an expert on the subject.

2) Can you really consider a 17 year-old car "new"?

Sounds like it's a really low mileage example (with only delivery Mil. )

3)What does "Car Sold Fob" mean?

"freight on board" meaning it will be shipped from..

4) Is the car in the U.S. or Germany?

...Germany

I think this auction is a good example of how using complete sentences would greatly aid it.

Agree - for $300k+, you could spring for a decent camera and dig the beotch out into the sunlight for some good pix.

Maybe there's a PO'ed spouse somewhere in Germany?

"You've got to get rid of that stupid car! You never drive it"

"Okay, I'll put it on eBay. If it doesn't sell, I get to keep it."

Car Sold Fob : Germany

FOB - Freight On Board (trucking / transportation term) means that you pick up the product (car) in Germany and you assume responsibility at that time. If he said FOB: your favorite city - that means he would ship it to "your favorite city"

So its in Germany

Widebody beat me to it

For that price it should be delivered by the celebrity of your choice and include dinner and a lifetime supply of bok choy.

This car was for sale at the Ventura show a few years back, IIRC it was taged at $250K and already registered in the USA.

I saw the 959 from the TajMaGaraj on Speed. It looked like it had the identical oil-filler-door as my 72. Then I see a shot of the left rear qtr. panel, and there was one there too. Does it have two oil tanks? A rear fuel tank?

I saw a 959 at a car auction in NYC a few years ago. It had been "keyed" down the entire side of the car yet was still being auctioned!? The first and only 959 I have seen.
I have no idea if it was actually sold or not...But it was still the coolest car there!

Is it completely irrational that this enrages me?

FOB actually means 'Free on Board'.

If the car is in Germany and the ad states 'FOB: Germany' this means the seller will pay to have the goods delivered to a ship or plane in Germany but the cost from the port to your place is your responsibility AND the product is yours the instant it crosses the ships rail or enters the plane. If the ship sinks with your new 959S aboard, it is your responsibility, not the sellers.

Is it sad that if given one of these that I'd sell it and use the proceeds to buy a really nice 356, a nice mid-80s 911 (ya know, a couple cars I could actually drive!), and use the rest to pay off the house and bills?
