New craigslist e-bay scam

So I am looking for a decent cheap SUV on Craigslist as a third car and run across an Izusu Trooper 2000 for $3800. 69k on it nice pics, nice shape, and local. The going rate is from this price to about $6000 for these. Guy has his name on there, lives about three miles from me, seems legit. I email him and get a response back that he is in Finland on business and the car is at the EBay shipping center in San Jose because it is listed through E Bay while he is gone and they will handle the transaction, and for $280 more they will deliver it from there to me in Orange County. Guess what, no Troopers on Ebay, he gave me the VIN but I didn't even bother. Why would the car be in San jose if he lives in Irvine ? If its too good to be true... Just wanted a decent beater.

Um the "eBay shipping center" should have tipped you off...

Isn't that in Nigeria?

It sure did.

This is an old scam been played out millions of times with all sorts of variations.

They usually want the shipping fee only upfront and then they claim they will ship it to you on approval.

saddly C-list has become over run with scams
once it was a good place to find deals
now mostly dealers and scams

if they donot have a local number listed I donot bother

The craigslist trick that pisses me off is when someone is pimping something like a used pinto radiator and they put crap like this at the bottom:

"Acura honda vw volkswagen truck suv wheels tires empi edelbrock ..."

Yep, they need to make the "flagging" system better in order to purge the B.S. off of there.

Great idea, great concept, sloppy execution.

Even with its shortcomings, the price is right. Stick to face to face dealings and it's pretty hard to get taken unless the guy is armed. Hopefully it will stay simple and not turn into another eBay.

If most Troopers are $6000 and this one is half price....

If it's San Jose, CA tell him I'll check it out for you.

funny how the ad disappeared from craigslist today, wonder why

Moneyguy1 12-16-2006 10:07 AM

That is the problem with such sites. If they could only come up with something as simple as a standard "want ad" format where you (the potential buyer) could contact and speak directly with the seller rather than go through hoops. Frankly, I prefer to buy "close to home" where I can get a firsthand view of what I am buying. Since it is sometimes difficult without some work to find where an object is located on e-bay, a lot of time can be wasted.

Just my opinion; yours may be totally different.
