and the beat goes on
"As the president has made clear," Gates said, "we simply cannot afford to fail in the Middle East. Failure in Iraq at this juncture would be a calamity that would haunt our nation, impair our credibility and endanger Americans for decades to come."
Same old nonsense. Same old raising of fears to move forward on a failed US ME policy. Just why would it be a calamity that would haunt our nation? Maybe we would learn not to give a President such sweeping powers again. Maybe the Congress would show a little backbone. Impair our credibility? Who is more credible: the boss who continues down a disastrous path or the one who admits his mistake and pulls the company back from the brink? Endanger Americans for decades to come? Is that something new? Americans will always be in danger from terrorists, we are the superpower, it goes with the territory. |

So sad that neither of you guys understand the Middle East nor the people living there.
Unfortunately it will come back to haunt you in the end. Joe A (who is sending this from Dubai and knows more about the people, customs and life here than he ever thought he would)

Joe, that is the same refrain that Gates is saying. So you are saying that US policy has been a rousing success because of all the admin people who do understand the ME?

I do understand, aside from fear of failure, what makes folks imagine that this conflict should be prolonged. And I know that conclusion is incorrect.
I'm still waiting for an answer to my question. Are we planning to exterminate the Muslims? Genocide? Or are we hoping to scare them into not hating us any more?

"It was when the Americans fled from Somalia that i knew they could be defeated, that Allah Willing, we would prevail. The Americans are very much weaker than the Russians, who we have already defeated." ~Osama Bin Laden (Paraphrase from memory) It is a HUGE mistake to think that the world as it exists today will remain as it is today unchanged, that the US will always enjoy prosperity and relative security. There are enemies out there that would eat our liver raw as soon as look at us, whether we wish to acknowledge it or not. For those of you with a short attention span, they flew 4 jets into our civilian filled buildings not five years ago. We are at war, next time they're liable to use nukes. ~Ulysses S. Grant - General of the Army and US President. "For a war to be won, it is not enough for one side to claim victory. It is also necessary for one side to admit defeat. Yet in the Arab-Israeli wars, the side that had won every time was not allowed to claim victory, while the side that had lost was prevented from admitting defeat. Why? Because each time the United Nations had intervened to put the victor and the vanquished on an equal basis and lock them into a problematic situation in the name of a mythical quest for an impossible peace." ~Amir Taheri ------------------- At any rate, my question is when are the Muslims going to stop waging war against US? When we're all dead, or are they trying to scare us into not hating them anymore? War is a double-edged sword if ever there was one. |
