What's up with J Vaughn on the stage with all these legends? I guess none of the others where going to belittle themselves playing rhythm. I kind of dug ZZTop at the end.

Talent by association? Jimmy Vaughn always struck me as a guy with modest talent, who didnt really try all that hard to master the guitar...but he did inspire his little brother, who practiced his butt off and turned in to a legend. The CD that they did together called "Family Style", produced by Nile Rodgers, had some good songs on it..."Telephone Song" is a great jam.

Saw J Vaughn live a few years back. Was not impressed one bit.
There was a local guy here in NY that was hands down better. Little Buster, he had a rep within the community but never broke out nationally. BB King once said that Buster was the only one that could fill his shoes. If Clapton was in town you'd go see Buster because there was a good chance that Eric would show up.

We listened to the entire 1st side, guy comes out and flips the cassette and we stood there awestruck and listened to the entire 2nd side. We asked the guy who it was and then marched right around the corner and each one of us picked up a copy. Think I wore mine out the 1st week.

What is this "cassette" thing you speak of?
![]() I own almost everything SRV ever did and he is at the top of my list of guitar players. I think his brother gets a bad rap.... "he's not as good as his brother", well duh... who is? Besides Jimmy plays a different style, kind of a rockabilly. I also love BB King but I don't compare him to SRV.

Uhhhh Jimmie taught Stevie. They just have different styles. Stevie was very much influenced by Hendrix as he grew. I'm pretty much over all the guitarists that worship at the SRV alter. I mean "Pride and Joy" has become the new "Louie Louie"!. He's DEAD for Christ sakes now get over it. I saw that special the other night. It was a great and vast variety of styles of players. To say any one was better than the other is as stupid as picking one guitarist as "The Best". The list of "great" guitar players is long. Just for the hell of it we shoulfd start naming them. I think we would all quickly see that they are all great at what they do. Just that the variety would set them apart. One could ask themselves just why J.J.Cale was there too. I also think Jimmy Vaughn was there because Stevie could not attend. It was a NAME thing more than a TALENT thing.
I did find it interesting that Clapton only used Nathan East on one song.

I've never been at the altar of SRV. Great player, but a bit too derivative of Jimi to be a "god" imho. That has been said of Trower but I find him to have much more his own "voice".
J.J. Cale is sublime. Jimmy Vaughn is just kinda "there" to me...doesn't really insult me but doesn't evoke much of an emotional response. Who was playing bass other than East? Or was it more acoustic stuff? Funny that my old bass player from HS days replaced Nathan East in the high school jazz band after Nathan graduated. Talk about some shoes to fill... |

I did not recognise him. I would have thought The Duck would have been there. I'm sure someone here knows who it was but nobody I knew. Could it have been Tommy Shannon? One of my heroes.

I recorded it yesterday in HD and watched it last night - some great music in those two hours.
I was pretty impressed by Vince Gill. Never listened to him before, but man, he can pick! And the jam that Joe Walsh did before Funk 49 was fantastic. Really good stuff. |

I saw Gill live at a fair in Tampa. The boy smokes! His band loves him too, you can just tell.

Looks like Duck.
Cropper sat in with Walsh. Have to agree that Vince Gill was a surprise to me. Enjoyed him. Santana was excellent as well. Used to see him a lot but got bored after a while, he became very predictable. Caught him this year at the last minute and was pleasently surprised that he is actually playing guitars other than the PRS's and seems to have found a new effects rack as well. He seems to have been revived by playing with all the "newcomers".

yep that's him. Age is catching up with all of us.
Santana needs to pick up his SG again.

Today, my favorite 3 blues guys are Peter Green, Freddie King, and the pre-bearded Billy Gibbons.
It took me a while after youtube got popular to realize that all of my favorite Santana stuff was actually played by Neil Schonn ![]() Last edited by Shuie; 12-16-2006 at 01:37 PM.. |

Believe it or not, I think Clapton is underrated. Really.

What you saw was the "Crossroads" guitar festival in Dallas, about 28 months ago. My son bought me tickets for Fathers Day, and we went and spent the Day. He also bought me the DVD that you're watching. which is cool because it has comments from lot's of people about who influenced them and such. It was a REALLY good show. Clapton played a couple of songs with just about everybody. Backup band was the old Booker T and the MG's. I didn't know Joe Walsh had as much Blues backround as he showed. I really liked the "jam session" with the greats sitting around playing, you'd see them nod at 1 guy and then off he went, and it went for a while that way. Mutual Respect all around, a lot of Love happnin. A lot of different styles so you can't say "best", just a wide scope of what a guitar can do "when you touch it right". I dug the hell out of it!!!
My wife accidentally mailed one the of the DVD's in a return to Netflix, and I had to buy another. Found 1 on Ebay for 8 bucks I think, well worth it if you're a guitar and Blues guy. and Janus, you're right ! Clapton can play! He has a great comment in there somewhere. He says, "I invited all the guys I've wanted to play with, and they all showed up!". He sat in with lots of people and always had something to add. A wide range of riffs he hears in his head that come out thru his fingers. Great Stuff!
