Colorado School of Mines
 

Hello Pelican braintrust. I have been looking into a few schools that I might want to transfer into next year. I have always wanted to study either Mechanical Engineering or Petroleum Engineering, but after I took a Geology class this semester I am having second decisions. Does anyone have any personal experience with this school? What are the pros and cons of this school for a Geology degree instead of at a 4 year college such as LSU?

Tough academically. Ranks with MIT, Cal Tech, Carnegie Mellon. Claims to have the worst campus food in the nation. About 90 minutes to Vail if you have time to ski.

I was hoping that you would answer this one. I talked to my professor about it, and he said I should give it a try. It really would be awesome to attend that school since I love the rockies.

and a buddy of mine (who drives a Boxster) is a professor there... I've been to the yearly mining course only. Very close to Coors!!!!!!!!!!!

Great school...two friends of mine, brothers, went there and felt the make the exact right choice.

I can not find it on any ranking of colleges by any measure. I never heard of it before.

Three feet of snow in the past 30 hours.

Even though it in near the Coors brewery, apparently Mines has the lowest amount of drinking in the US.

Almost every year for the past 18, one or more of my former students have gone to Mines. Every one has had a good experience. Every one complains about the difficulty. I’m pretty sure all have graduated.

If this really does matter, you might consider my geology alma mater, UC Santa Barbara. Magnificent scenery. And the views of the beaches and mountains are pretty nice, too. But they also have a very good geology program. Colorado is top-rate, as well.

I'm still a practicing geologist with my own company. Feel free to PM me so we can talk about options in a geology career.

My bosses oldest daughter went there, and I know that its very spendy but an excellent school.

Petroleum Geology has GOT to give the highest job security of any job on this green planet.

One time way back in the day during a stateside field problem(wargame) i discoverd that a 5.56mm blank fits perfectly in the firing cylinder of an M16A1 training sim. So we rigged some of em up on tripwires with blanks in them and put em on both sides of an interior doorway when we were defending a position in a blockhouse. The BLUFOR guys came charging through the doorway(usually a fatal mistake in MOUT), set off the mine, and apparently a 5.56 blank still has enough force when inserted into the inert plastic mine body that it actually still blew up!

LOL, they were covered in blue dust, and it scared the livin' snot out of them....it was great. :)
