Wow, fast shipping of wine

I ordered a case and a half of wine from Tablas Creek, located south of the SF Bay area near Paso Robles. Order went in on line late Wednesday night, was just delivered to my door 30 minutes ago.

A case of Mourvedre 2004 and 6 bottles of Syrah 2004. Both are Southern Rhone Valley types, on vines that are clones of the French vines.

I have great expectations of this wine in about 5 more years, even though it's quite drinkable now.

25% discount on a case, I can't remember what it was for 6 or more, but since I ordered 1.5 cases I received the 25% discount on all of it.

Yes, it is very good. But, this is still considered a low cost wine.

You want fast wine? Get a box of the stuff at Rite Aid. I can have it here in less than 5 minutes. After the 5th or 6th glass who cares who stomped on the grapes?

Once you've tasted good wine, there is no substitute. It's like leaving your Chevy parked and driving a 911 for the first time. You can't go back, successfully.

Prices are very reasonable. May have to place an order myself. Did not think S.C. allows wine shipment Pat.

Well, I don't think they did just a few months ago. I tried to order from one of my favorite vineyards in CA, Sausal, and they said they couldn't ship into SC without paying an annual $300.00 license fee, which they didn't think would pay.

I don't remember reading about a change, but several cases have been shipped my brother who lives nearby, and now to me without problem.

The Supreme Court ruling last year helped a lot with shipping wine. Of course, MD is still in the dark ages.

In one of those curious things, the northeast appears to be the last bastion of non-freedom of commerce, i.e. the wine and liquor distributors have bought and paid for their "right" to screw the citizens of those states. I should say, the northeast except Vermont and New Hampshire. There are a few in the south, and a few in mid-America as well.

Here's a list of states that do not allow shipping of wine from the winery to the consumer. Not very many, but enough to be a pain in the arse.

Alabama
Arkansas
Delaware
Kansas
Kentucky
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts (Fedex will not ship wine into or out of MA)
Mississippi
Montana
New Jersey
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
South Dakota
Tennessee
Utah

This is off gthe FedEx web site.

I shop at the one on Woodruff Road in Greenville. They stock some really good Rhone varietals, try Domaine Chante Cigale Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2003. And, a dry white muscadine wine from Irvin-House Vinyards, we use it in sauces, and it's not bad either if you like white.

Just picked up a mixed case for the Christmas.

Nothing of note, but the Stags Leap merlot if a good bottle.

I have a 1998 Bottle of Far Niente Estate. Thinking of drinking it, but I paid $100 for it, and it now goes for $150-180. Perhaps it should go in the 'hold' rack.

It's a good idea to find out how long a good bottle is expected to remain good. Most will go between 7-10 years after bottling, less for an average vintage, more for extraordinary vintages. If that $100.00 bottle was a good deal on that wine, it's probably safe to hold it until at least 2008 or longer. I'd do some research to find out. If it not expected to hold well, and this is it's ninth year coming up, then drinking it is best.

Ooh, that's tempting. But I shouldn't -- I'm already a car snob, an espresso snob, and a photography snob -- I can't afford to be a wine snob, too.

There's a Total Wine local, about 5 minutes from where my girlfriend lives. Talk about convenient.
