Where do you work on your car? At home? Does it make noise? Maybe not to much different from working on airplane mechanicals (except for the prop or fan noise). If you have mechanical work done by others and a stock mufller, good for you. However, I do see a problem if a neighbor was conducting a manufacturing operation and creating unnecessary noise. My neighbor, in fact, does just that. They manufacture medical-grade test instruments in a room in their home - a small NC milling machine runs all the time. Sounds like a sewing machine. Sells the devices to hospitals and labs for $3000 a pop. Pretty nice but probably illegal in the more up-tight areas of our country.

Unreasonably restricted home owner regs are pretty common in the well-manicured, cookie-cutter communities in So. Cal's suburbs. In return for a nice house in a nice area, residents must follow the neighborhood rules, no matter how inane. No thanks.

There are nice homes in nice areas without the draconian stepford rules.

Brief story:
In my first apartment, one day I decided to test my newly-acquired home audio speakers by playing Also Sprach Zarathustra (theme from Kubrick's 2001) at probably 100 Db (it was loud, bass notes were chest thumping great). It was the middle of the day when most were presumably at work. My landlord (great old guy) knocked on my door a few minutes later and politely told me a neighbor down the street called him about the noise (err, okay). I got the hint. End of sound test. Lesson learned from landlord: Life is too short to get pants wadded up for no/little reason.

The "castle doctrine" is long dead people. The notion that you can do anything you want on your own property is ludicrous and has been for many years. Ain't coming back either.

I still can. I probably have at least ten years before the urban types expand into my area (I hope it never happens). I can't believe some people have the audacity to build a house next to an established hog farm, then ***** about the smell a couple years later WTF!!?!!

Unless the airplane builder was spraying paint outdoors and getting overspray on the neighbors cars, building a plane in the garage is no better or worse than assembling your kid's bike, changing the wiper blades on your car, a science fair project, putting a new spark plug in your lawnmower, etc etc.

And FastPat.......before you start thinking I have crossed over to your side on the whole "our govt is evil" deal...... I still don't care if the feds listen to phone calls for the purpose of stopping terrorism.

Sammy, I am guessing you wouldn't want to live next to me. My family and I fly and build real and model airplanes, shoot guns, ride dirtbikes, snowmobiles and 4-wheelers in our back yard and runway. ;)

Just wait. . . Soon there will be building department officials, inspectors, neighborhood patrols and homeowner's societies all looking for ways to regulate and fine what you do on your property to make themselves richer. It's coming. Trust me. It's already here in L.A. . .

I build and fly model airplanes (which some have surmised that this ordinance could pertain too) and on occasion I run my engines on the bench outside of my garage. I only do this during daytime hours when there is daylight. So in the winter I don't do it after about 5pm but in the summer I might do it around 7ish.

My engines aren't very big and I always use their mufflers. They are MUCH quieter than my neighbor down the street's harleys.

In fact to compare them would be to say that my engines are nearly silent. I've had no complaints but if I were to get one from a neighbor I would certainly be understanding and try to work with them on it. When living in a populated area you can't expect everything to be quiet for you all the time. My house is pretty darned close to my neighbors and he's banging around in there on his remodel all the time - regardless of if I am taking a nap or my son or wife is taking a nap.

Typical experimental aircraft builders aren't building 747s in their garages they are more likely J-3 cub sized and in pieces that are much smaller. As I said before - this is something that should have been handled with the police between these two neighbors if there were a problem of one neighbor not respecting the other's space. An ordinance affecting everyone is way overkill.

It seems some here think the world is all about money - jsut earn more money, and pay someone else to do what you could, and should have the right to do, yourself.

If you want to live in a neighborhood where there is no noise, and everything is short cut and green, then find a place like that to live in. If you move into a place that isn't - don't go rab and cry and annoy everyone who doesn't care. Now I don't know who moved in first in this case.

On another note, I hate it when a race track is closed down by people who move into a house near it, and then complain. Sadly, some famous tracks have had to close their doors.

So anyway, yes, I could of paied $2K to have a machine like this built for me, I paid about $300 in parts and materials, and made my own. 1KW motor. Thing screams bloody murder. Very lightweight very an eletric monster truck, only 9lb's flat.

(Now I also have another truck I built before, using new parts from manufacturers, rather then homebuilding stuff, and it probably did cost $2K, but I did it over time, so don't realy know) Truck is made entirely out of billet aluminum, tough as nails, weighs 13lb's and although at that weight its slower, woe be to anyone who tries to "bump pass", they go spinning off the tracks. :)

Buying new parts, $770 for for the drivetrain(http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/), , a top of the line radio and receiver, price includes two servo's neccesary($250) Brushless motor, $70, controller for Brushless motor, $225. Then suspension, steering rack, and wheels. On that truck, I got the A-arms from the old style E-maxx, can probably pick them up for cheap from someone who has them sitting in a parts bin from when they went to wider suspension. A new set of wheels and tires will run about $80, but you can do much better on ebay. Also a two speed gearbox and clutch $70. Another $70 or so for shocks and springs

Chassis, I don't have the materials on hand to duplicate it, I had some scrap plastic and aluminum and sculpted the plastic with a cutting bit on a hand drill for the upper deck, then made the lower deck out aluminum sheet. Assuming I made a free chassis, we are at $1,535. (I'd only do that if I happened to have a lot of free time).

Then $20 for the lamborghini body, and $20 to paint it.

That doesn't even include batteries or charger(s). I would build the truck for 16 cells, using two eight cell packs($160 for the pair), you might want two pairs, depending on how you drive, the potential current the motor can draw may you leave with 5-20 minutes of run time. (I get about 8m on the racetrack, and about 15m around my home).

If being race legal isn't important, Lithium Polymer is dangerous if treated ill, but has a lot more punch, $200 would get you the equivilant run time two sets of NMHD's or better. They are lightweight, best battery chemistry publicly availible on the market in terms of performance, weight, energy storage, their weakness is they self destruct if over charged, or discharged. Add in another $100 for a charger.

Odds are, you don't need the kind of vehichle I built, its extreme. I raced it with a much older motor system against gas powered cars, held the lead from lap 2, until the batteries died 8 minutes in(15 minute race). In terms of HP, the other cars where going about 5MPH faster on the main straight, but I had the cornering to paste them elseware. I have never taken it racing since I installed my brushless, I need to first fix my 944 before I spend any more on RC. I lucked out in building that truck not for $1500-2000, but for a few hundred, by being in the right place at the right time, and willing to work a little. (I bought some used trucks, parted them kept, what I needed, and paid for buying the truck with the parts I kept) I still have a complete Emaxx suspension and bulkhead set still, diffs, axels, knuckles, etc. Never got around to selling it.

Easiest way is to buy a ready to run(RTR) truck, custom parts are expensive to buy new. I think you can get a truck for around $300.

Both of my trucks are loosely tied in design to the Traxxas E-maxx, made in plastic, I think they cost about $300 new now.

The bodies are interchangeable, these sports car bodies are not made for monster trucks, but I get thme to fit. I also paint my own.
