Big, bright visible tattoos?

I met this chick a few weeks ago with some prominent tats. Today she was whinging that that people keep looking at them, and ask her if she has any that aren't visible. I told her that people - particularly women - with very colorful visible tats were basically begging for people to look at them. I told her it was viewed the same as people wearing huge amounts of gaudy jewelry, big purple felt hats, or putting 30" chrome spinners on their cars - they all scream LOOK AT ME!!!.

I told her that complaining about the attention that her tats draw is akin to a woman going out and getting 48DD implants and then whining when men stare.

Obviously I won't be getting any, but I thought I'd pitch it to the Pelican brain trust: are huge, colorful, very visible tats the calling card of an attention whore, or should one avert their eyes and not comment, like they were some huge congenital body defect?

It is like driving a Porsche. People are going to make up their own conclusions about you without knowing you. Screw them all and to each their own. How do you feel about being out with a women with an outgoing tattoo look? Do you feel a little bit judged by the company YOU keep?

Hey now... you makin fun of my big purple felt hat?

And no I don't wear it to get people to stare at me!

I wear it because it goes perfectly with my purple felt jumpsuit... so there.

I usually just grin and maybe quietly chuckle a bit when I see a woman with a tattoo. I like to think about how stupid they will look when and if they grow out of their whitetrash stage and become a mother attending their childs school functions.

I especially get a kick out of the overweight ones that have the tramp stamp on their lower backs right above their whale tail undies. Just lovely!

Coming from a viewpoint of experience (I have 2 tattoos), here is the scoop. Tattoos are a sign of low self esteem. The general mindset is that somehow you will be better, more unique if you get tattoos, that there will be no one quite like you now.

There are 1000 excuses people make about getting tatts, the most common being "I'm getting it for myself", "Its art" and "I'm putting it where most people won't see it".

In either case, its BS. There is a certain addiction to it, the euphoria afterward of all those endorphins to counteract the pain. And besides that, think about this aspect of it: you are paying someone to inflict pain on you, to stab you with a needle.

I knew an old man years ago that had a fascinating life. He was a Marine, a logger, a cowboy. He was covered with scars and walked with a pronounced limp. Even in his old age he was tough as nails. He spent his old age living in a cabin in the Oregon mountains. One night we were sitting around a fire drinking beer in front of his cabin. My cousin was a logger and decided to show the old man his new tattoo. My cousin asked him if he had any ink. The old man said, "No. If you live hard enough, life will mark you up just right."

This afternoon, I saw a big, greasy biker dude walking down the sidewalk witha huge tatoo right on his forehead. I chose to "avert my eyes." I did cry a little bit 'cause I was scared.

But really, tattoos are for pussies. You want to try something really painful? Have them burned off with a laser. That has redefined pain for me. The only thing like it is putting your hand under the hottest water that comes from the tap, for about 10 minutes. Or a hot frying pan.

If it's a woman I ask if I can lick their tattoos. I don't ask men anything

Getting a tattoo you can't see is like getting a car you can't drive.
