3.7 earthquake outside Berkeley.
 

It gave me a pretty good shake. I must be getting old. I used to like earthquakes when I was a kid. Now they leave me feeling unsettled. (No pun intended.)

There were 321 quakes in California last week. They were all small, but tonight's definitely got the room swaying. (It is shown in red) My home office is above the master bedroom. I don't think this house will hold up in a big quake.

something bad indeed, the $2500.00 trench that was almost completed behind my house in order to install foundation drainage collapsed during the shake....... looks like its going to be a 5000.00 trench now......

Was in Lafayette when this happened. Definately got my attention.

3.7 is barely worth mentioning.

A few small ones is better than one large one. Relief off the faults - good thing.

Lets keep these earthquakes lower than 2.5. I have an insurance policy renewing on 15,000 units in California in March. Catistrofic Insurance market is still going crazy after Katrina. I am sure I will see my EQ part of the policy increase 100%

Yes many small quakes better that few (or one) big one.

Hundreds (thousands) of quakes happen every day all over the world, most of them too small for us to notice.

It's a wood frame split level built on a slight slope. Odd foundation. There is no basement, but you can walk undeneath most of the house without ducking. Looks like a big structure built on a hundred stilts. There is a second floor that has only a loft and my office and a guest room/bath. It sits over the master bedroom.

Under the master bedroom is about 6 feet of walking space. The bedroom has an 11 foot ceiling and the office above has an 11 foot peaked ceiling. If I'm in my office during a quake, I get the distinct feeling of sitting on top of a flag pole in the wind.

Not necessarily true. A friend of mine from my days at Cal is a geologist for USGS. We both grew up living through 'quakes in So Cal. Since all of my extended family is in the Bay Area, I called him after I saw this post. He recommends a very simple primer:

Problem with the "rating" system the media uses is one dimensional whereas in an earthquake it is four (or infinitely) dimensional. One morning I was checking our earthquake reporting system (looks much like the picture that Moses posted) and it showed a 3.5 in El Centro a few minutes before however we felt nothing here.

Just heard an NPR report on the largest club at UC Berkeley this semester. The Republican Club. Times have changed at Bezerkeley.

So I suspect it's Gomorrah at the moment. The Democrats are busy sodomizing Washington DC.

That is a shocker...I can remember stuff at Sproul in the late 70's, early 80's that would curl your hair.
But that was mostly for show. UCB was, in many ways, at least in my part of the school, fairly conservative.
I lived up on Euclid Ave, past the Rose Garden...one more 5.0+ and I'm thinking the place is down on San Pablo.

My dream of oceanfront property is getting closer to fulfillment......

I hope you guys are really careful when you are working under your cars. I always use jack stands and I give the car a shove to see if it's secure but I don't know if it would withstand and earthquake.
