The big gamble, risking it all.

All hypothetical, yet answers should be realistic.

We were talking here and the story of the FedEx guy that put the companies payroll on Black (or was it red) in a go or blow effort to save his company came up (according to lore he won and the company survived).

Anyway, if you had a couple hundred grand and maybe a month or two to "go or blow" what would you do?

(assume you need to double it or so to "go", just like the FedEx story)

My vote was take it and move to South America, but I avoided to spirit of the question

Years ago a fellow from LA embezzled half a million cash from his employers safe. It represented a three day weekends gross reciepts. He bought a plane ticket in a different name to some country in Central America. He went to Vegas, made two big bets. He won both. He quietly returned the half million before it was missed and kept 1.5 million for himself. He never used the plane ticket, but resigned from his job after the quarterly accounting was all safely squared away.

He wrote a book about his adventure but I forget the title.

As I remember, the guy was brilliant, but had a string of failed business ventures. His wife left him after his second bankruptcy and he started a third, very successful business but he lost most of it in a liability suit and the rest was stolen by unscrupulous partners. He was a skilled accountant and took a job as controller, I think of a string of cash-based businesses in LA. At the time of the theft, the guy was desperate and broke. He figured if he lost the money he would flee the country and start over in Central America.

If you have to double the money in one day, and you are willing to lose it all, Vegas does seem to be the best way to go.

It eliminates a lot of the problems of other schemes:

1) If you win, you WILL be paid.

2) Your odds aren't too bad. Play a hand of blackjack, and you have what, a 48 or 49% chance of winning? Not bad.

3) It's legal!

What's the limit in Vegas at which they start to get your identification and tax information? Obviously, if you win $100, they just pay you, no questions asked. But $1,000? $100,000?

I was just in Vegas and the casino got tax ID info from my friend when he won $5000 in a $100 slot machine.

Yep, for some reason slot winnings get taxed at $1k I think. But table winnings......$10k+ and you can cash some now...some later and stay under the radar. They don't know what you have.

There you go...send it all to Tabby. He'd be happy to place the bet for you...
