My point is there is no easy or simple answer. We cannot arbitrarily raise wages and expect to suffer no consequence(s).
Tell a manufacturing plant to raise salaries 20% across the board, and that plant may very well move production outside US borders. I'm not arguing the ethics or morality of this action. It is reality.
I'm not going to throw many stones, because I have not done a lot of research. Additionally, I cannot honestly say my meager stock portfolio is invested in companies that do not exploit or have never exploited the market, employees, or consumers to some extent.
My initial viewpoint is protectionist policy through wage or import tariffs is a very dangerous policy. A delicate balance is ideal--one in which we can view and admire American economic independence from one of the millions of $999 42" plasma screen TVs which occupy American living rooms today.
