Need help..."Red book" valuation

Long story cut short.....

Daily driver recently burned to the ground 2 days before Christmas...

No injuries...and the insurance company ( State Farm) is conducting themselves rather well.....except for this one thing.

They intend to cut me a total loss check based on the AVERAGE value of NADA retail and REDBOOK. NADA, as well as Kelly Blue Book, etc...are easy to find on the web as a counter-check. REDBOOK ( aka National Market Report guides, now offered via Primark) offers a valuation quote only via a hefty subscription service...not otherwise available on internet.

If anyone has access to REDBOOK...or has other advice how to get a valuation ahead of time through REDBOOK ( so I have some ammunition in case I need to deal hard with State Farm)..please post here or send PM....or mail me at Wil Ferch at Praxair dot com, and use an "underscore" between my first and last name.

Thanks,
- Wil

Trader:
1993 Toyota Corolla DX....245K miles ( I know !)....A/C, auto trans, stereo, fastidiously maintained mechanically, with body between "good" and "excellent".

I have NADA, Kelly Blue Book, etc. valuations...but the ever-elusive Red Book is what I now need....

Wil sorry I thought you were talking about a P car too. IMHO we're not talking about a big number and I dont think any book or source is going to put a value on that car. I am sure it was worth more to you then to anyone else. I love driving my 96 Cherokee becasue its been paid for since 99 and it just runs and runs and runs I am sure its worth more to me then anyone else in the world. Good Luck

Missing the point.... there are actually ( and surprisingly) book values for a car like this, even with the mileage. The numbers are also surprisingly good from the "other" valuation sources..maybe because it's a Toyota... I see 200k+ miles Toyotas for sale by DEALERS on the web...can you imagine ?

Anyway....yeah, it's not a Porsche, that's why it was posted OT first....but the topic of needing valuations via a specific source... Redbook... may still apply to some other poor soul on this board with a Porsche...so it has relevance.

If anyone does have this ability and can check stuff I've got one to look up too. Apparently WV uses the Red Book when assessing tax value on cars. Imagine my wife's and my surprise when we went to pay taxes on her 02 Jeep Liberty which had been about $275-300 in SC to $700 and change at the WV DMV. My 911 was like $120 total in WV after being $45 in SC. My Jeep is due for tags in Feb, and I'd like an estimate of what to expect.

Pookie....as much as I understand and can sympathize with your situation....it might be a good idea to start your own thread and reference this one inside of it..... right now we have no answers from anyone ( yet) and coat-tailing won't make the "ride" any easier at this point......

Not pickin' on ya...

So....anyone with REDBOOK info ? .......

O my bad dude, just stating that I needed the info too, didn't mean to step on your toes.

Although I don't think either of us will be getting any help, it looks like we are the only ones suffer through Red Book issues.

Even though it has been good for a couple of bumps.

The engine on my 944S caught fire on a test drive after I did some fuel work in April of 2005. (Search the 944 forum for pictures and the full story. Suffice to say there was little I could have done to prevent it except to have had a fire extinguisher in the car.)

I was very much in the same position as you, and expecting a fight. State Farm offered $6,500 for my 'S', which I had paid around $4,500 for less than a year earlier. (I had put much more than $2,000 into it in repairs--but we all know that doesn't really help the valuation of a car that much.) Suffice to say, I was very happy with the offer and immediately disarmed.

My opinion is SF is a little more expensive than other insurers, but you get a few less hassles for your money. What it really comes down to is the specific adjuster who handles your claim--you could always get a real d*ck. Let's hope it all goes smoothly for you.

As for Red Book, never heard of it. If it's a subscription service, maybe someone in an auto-related industry here can help. I've had to do some valuations in the last few years (bought a few used cars, donated one to charity) and have used multiple sources like Kelley and Edmunds.com. I've found them to generally be within 5% of each other. If the numbers from Kelley look good to you, I wouldn't expect any big surprises.

Follow -up.....

State Farm came through with a fair offer.... ( Redbook or not)...and the issue is diffused.

Another data point that insurance "premium" costs are only 1/2 the equation...settlement of claim is the other half. Note to those of you considering lower-premium options ( GEICO, etc)......

With nota, you've been paying full coverage on a 13yr old Corolla? You already paid for several.

A very wise man once told me that you should never take out insurance on any loss that you can reasonably afford....essentially you are better off being self insured on many things IF you can take the hit when the bad things happen.

What it did for me is to not take maximum coverage on things, highest deductible I can get and some things I plain do not insure. Can't prove that it has saved me any money long term....but it seems to make sense.

I've occasionally thought about not having the extra coverage...my cars tend to be long-term deals and the "point" at which it makes sense to carry ( or not carry) a certain amount of insurance becomes blurred...

....point taken .....

Just like guys who over-modify cars.... do all of our actions have to make the absolute best $ sense? Maybe not trading this car in every 3-4 years toward a new one (and taking a BIG depreciation hit)...more than overcomes this lapse of proper judgment...

All I wanted was a Redbook source of info... with enough background info for the question to make sense...thanks all for the concerns expressed.....
